Congress has proposed a 3.4% pay increase while Obama proposes a lower 2.9% increase. A full 1% lower than last year's increase. http://www.military.com/benefits/military-pay/2010-military-pay-charts?ESRC=navy-a.nl Here's my shock face. Sorry to interrupt everyone's regular programmed HD bashing with a no doubt soon to be political thread. (Message edited by pkforbes87 on October 22, 2009) |

Meh, 2.9% is about 56% more than I'll be getting. I appreciate your service, but when most of the country is struggling financially, I don't think you should be bitchin about a pay increase...just my opinion. |

Usually your pay increases are tied to inflation.... have you taken a look at where those numbers are? If they would have me back, I would go. At 41 I am too old for them, unless I want to pick up Arabic (which I dont) |

Oh, I bitch about other things too. Mainly the fact that every four years I am required to uproot and move hundreds if not thousands of miles away from every single person that I know and love. But I did chose this career path and I'll gladly accept the consequences. |

Haha yeah, I have several other family members that are in the service. One cousin that is in the Navy, and they move (with their 3 little kids) every 2 years! Yikes! Trust me, I mean no dis-respect. But I am getting by with less than 1/2 the pay I got a year ago. A 2.9% increase sounds rosy to me. Now, where did we put the f'in change we can believe in?? |

Social Security recipients aren't getting a cost of living increase, unless Congress changes it's mind. Seriously, now is not the time to be bitching about pay increases. While the military is probably one of the most important branches and responsibilities of the federal government, we are spending ourselves into oblivion and if anyone has cared to pay attention the worst may yet to come. |

Well put, without politicians that can say "we cant afford this, let alone whats already been promised" entitlements are going to wreak havok on the financial condition of the federal government in the very near future. In short..... we're screwed. http://www.iousathemovie.com/ |

All of the "now is not the time" is total BULL$HIT! 10 years ago when "times were good" public sector was getting 20+% raises...what did the government servants get? 4%. This has been going on FOR YEARS. In bad times people come out in droves to complain that public servants get 4% raises "when the rest of the nation is lucky to have a job". Where are all of these people when public sector gets 20% and the government ONLY gets 4%? Oh, they are out on their new boats. ac |

Public servants have always traded premium level pay for job stability and benefits..... but I think the days of stability and benefits are going to be soon an endangered species. There's an old saying that I used to hear all the time when growing up in the DC area. "You're never going to get rich working for the gov't, but you're never gonna lose your job either" |

Actually, there have been several news pieces smashing the myth that federal government workers are underpaid. Maryland has the highest medium household income ($70,545) in the nation, surpassing NJ. Maryland didn't get that way from rich Ravens and Orioles players. It's a direct result of the federal money machine. I've been saying for years, if the rest of the country could see what really goes on in D.C. there would be instantaneous revolution. http://www.cato.org/pubs/tbb/tbb-0605-35.pdf |

I've been saying for years, if the rest of the country could see what really goes on in D.C. there would be instantaneous revolution. Most of those wealthy folks in the DC work for, or are gov't contractors, and they are making money hand over fist. Like you said, part of the federal money machine..... but in general they are not govt employees. Take a look as USAjobs and scroll through the pay rates for fed employees...... nothing to get too exited about in their pay rates. Not bad, but not great either. But I never said they were underpaid, imo they make an average salary in general, maybe slightly below what they would in the private sector, but not by much. However, they are never going to see the big salaries or have a chance to make that leap to mgt where the big bonuses (cause they dont exist in govt) are possible. In return for middle class aspirations they get stability, and a pension thats kinda sweet when compared to anything else out there. Local and state gov't employees are kinda in the same boat as the fed employees. |

"Seriously, now is not the time to be bitching about pay increases. While the military is THE most important branch and responsibility of the federal government, we are spending ourselves into oblivion and if anyone has cared to pay attention the worst may yet to come." There, fixed it for ya. And one the only Constitutionally mandated functions that our Gov't accomplishes. If they cut off most of the sloth programs they probably shouldn't be funding we wouldn't have the debt load we have. To the OP, first, THANK YOU for your service. I feel your pain, but not likely to garner much sympathy in an environment of high layoffs and many paycuts. If we could cut off earmarks, paybacks to PAC supporters and the general graft in the Federal Gov't I'd GLADLY support paying our soldiers/sailors/airmen much, much more. My Bro is enduring his fourth stint in the sandbox and has moved around more in the last twenty years than I care to count. You all have earned my deepest respect and admiration....... I went from being an Army contractor, to being a air force civilian ( all the while being a guardsman,) and I took a HUGE pay cut in order to survive!!!! Also, I live in, and was born in Maryland; I live no lavish life! |

There are ways to get your but some extra pay, ESPECIALLY in the Navy. Get yourself a language qualification, Get your air crew certification, Get your butt to sea, Haze Grey & Away Get that promotion (depending on your rate and your multiplier) Get some hazard duty pay.... get cross assigned to the Marine Corps. Get a reenlistment bonus (again rate & service dependant) Stay in, get some time in grade pay bumps. And the favorite all time no win situation to add to your paycheck bottom line... pop a few kidlets (though the return on investment there is questionable sound fiscal monetary policy) 10 yrs USNR 2 yrs DOD cont @ USMC 3 Yrs Washington Army National Guard Each jump was a pay raise, why else do it? |

I'm perfectly fine with a 2.9% increase. I'll be promoted in December, get the 2.9 annual in January, and go over 12 in May. That's three pay raises in a 6-month period. I can't complain. |

My only complaint about the military is being on call 247 or being deployed for 6months+ a year or in combat zone is that you don't get overtime or additional time off to be with your family when you are back state side at a desk job. If you in a combat zone, you should be entitled to as much time off as you were in the combat zone. If you were in Iraq for 1 year, you should get 1 year off with your family. You could do the math to figure out the normal comp time 24hr x 365 = 8544 hr worked 8544hr - 2080hr (avg # of work hr per year) = 6464hr or 808 days of comp time . So, the member would be entitled to just over 2 years of comp time. |

Cityxslicker-Well Put. The fastest and best pay raise is a PROMOTION. I used to have to hear this same argument when I was in. Honestly though I made a LOT more money when I was in the service vs. now that Im out. When I first got out I had to work 3 fricken jobs to make what I was making in the Army. Its always fun to complain because you feel the grass is greener on the other side, well let me tell ya....Its not so fun on civilian life right now. Be happy you have a job and amazing benefits. And honestly blaming the president gets old whether youre liberal or conservative. |
