I have a 2000 M2, it started a little rough this morning abut not bad, came up to idle nice with the choke on, about 2-3 mins. into the warm up it died and spewed gas that came out by(not through) the shifter. It would not restart but I did not try that hard as not wanting to damage anything. The time was about 0640 and dark out so I could not investigate any further plus I was late for work.

Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. I REALLY want to ride to the factory on the 26th.

Thanks Michael

I will post this on the "Old School" board also.

Gas probably dripped down onto the shifter, from the fuel valve or a busted hose. There should be NO gas inside the primary...

The carb probably flooded causing gas to drip down the fuel line and off the petcock.

If this happens again, shut off the petcock and try starting the engine with the throttle wide open until it starts to fire.

The wide open throttle while cranking lets in only air so that eventually the flooded (over rich) condition can lean out enough to where the engine fires and starts. Once it starts, let off the throttle slowly until it can idle by itself, then open the petcock.

Hopefully whatever caused the carb float to stick will pass and the bike will run normally. But if it continues to flood, repeat the shut-off-the-petcock routine until it clears again.

Sometime giving the carburetor a few reasonable taps (use something like the handle of a screwdriver) will free a stuck float.
