Well... I got caught up in the emotion of Buell's closing and made the mistake of calling a local dealer today.

Within a couple of hours I was deciding between a XB9SX (City Cross) and a XB12SS. I had previously owned a City Cross and really enjoyed it, preferring the 9 motor to the 12 in my Ulysses.

But after sitting on both, I felt a little more comfortable on the XB12SS and frankly preferred the color scheme.

The 1125's just don't appeal to me aesthetically and I'm a little leery of that motor, feeling that it is still too new. Seemed pretty uncomfortable to me as well. The air cooled Buell power plants have been around long enough I feel like they are pretty well sorted out.

It was a little more than I wanted to pay as this particular dealership isn't discounting them as much as some others I have read about, but I saved over $3000 and spent about half of that upgrading and extending the warranty an additional three years for a total of five. I usually pass on extended service plans but thought under the circumstances it would be prudent .

When I told the sales manager about the very deep discounts some were selling Buells for, he suggested that they might not have signed the agreement to service Buells for seven years. He told me his dealership had. I did not even inquire about a price on the 1125 models.

So...I knowingly and willingly made myself an orphan Buell owner this afternoon. I already have two bikes I am not riding much. I have no rational argument as it was purely an emotionally and psychologically driven decision. When I called the wife to let her know about she said, "You bought another motorcycle?"

My response:

"Well... I wasn't planning on getting another motorcycle for a long time but I can't be held responsible for Buell going out of business, can I?"

Events in my life the last several years in many ways mirror those of Erik Buell and his emotional announcement regarding the end of Buell Motorcycles touched me.

As I approach the mid century mark, I am becoming overly sentimental and nostalgic. I don't like what is happening to my home town and my country, and I'm not referring to politics. I am referring to economic, social, and cultural upheaval. James McMurtree's song "We Can't Make It Here Anymore" comes to mind.

I wanted to have something unique that reflects the better qualities of our people -- innovation, passion, and fun. In spite of their quirks and the bumpy history I have had with the company and dealerships, Buell motorcycle reflects those qualities. And I wanted to purchase a new one while that option was still available to me.

I remember the joy I had riding Buells I owned a few years ago -- a joy that seems to escape me with my current primary ride. I don't know if I can re-capture that sense of flying and the visceral feel only a Buell seems to be able to provide me but I thought it was worth a few thousand dollars to give it a shot.

To heal a wounded psyche and a heavy heart is probably asking too much of a motorcycle, but after I get the suspension set up I am sure going to give it a chance.
