I have a friend with a chain drive cycle and he was looking to change his sprocket, etc to a setup that would provide more torque. The "kit" he was looking at is called a 520 such and such. His question is what does the 520 stand for? Anyone know what it refers to?

That would be the chain size.

#520 chain- it refers to the size of the chain. It's a smaller (lighter) chain than what's on his bike now and might save a couple of pounds of weight.

A belt saves even more.

530 and heavier chain just doesn't stretch and lasts for-freaking-ever... but it creates a bit more drag, inertia, whatever you want to think of it - it robs power and adds a little weight in heavier chain and sprockets

First digit is the pitch in 1/8 inch increments. Second digit is width in 1/8 increments (put imaginary decimal in there)

520 is pitch of 5/8, width is 2/8 (1/4). 530 is 5/8 pitch, 3/8 width

that makes a 525 a pitch of 5/8 width of 2.5/8 (5/16)

Lighter pitch chain does have the benefit of saving weight, lowers rotational mass, etc...good for performance and so on.

But...it will stretch more, wear out faster and be easier to break...been there, done that...
