I met Kristi one night when I was riding with a friend of mine, driving his mother's station wagon. As we were riding, two girls drove passed in a Triumph Spitefire and my friend took off after them. Apparently one of the four of us in the wagon, knew the passenger of the Spitfire. They stopped and we all got out. From the first time I saw Kristi there was a connection. I was seventeen and she was sixteen. We dated on and off for the next year and half. Even when we were off, all our friends still considered us a couple. On Kristi's eighteenth birthday we went out on a date and from that point we were on. A few weeks later we decided to go steady on 10/14/84.
Since Kristi is the memory of the two of us, I was fortunate that when we decided to get married, that a Saturday happened to be exactly five years from the point we became a couple. For someone as absent-minded as myself it sure was a blessing that I only had to remember one date. So twenty years ago we said our "I do's". We knew each other for six and half years by then, but I was completely taken back by the sight of Kristi in her wedding dress. I thought it was going to be the pinnacle in our relationship. I was wrong. Through the years, the births of our three children and all the ups and downs, I still do not know if I have actually reached that pinnacle I thought we reached twenty years ago. It just keeps getting better and there was no way twenty years ago I would have believed I could love her more now than that day two decades ago. |
