Thanks all. I just wanted mostly to make sure I'd know someone when I got there. Motivations: I'm not real happy here and there's the mantra singing in the back of my mind, I don't want to live and die in the same place... I'm at a "why not" place in time. Personal barriers to moving have been lifted (all good - no worries). This is my chance to pull it off. Why Baltimore? I looked into census data to see where all the Filipinos ended up in the US (so wife can make new friends). Three concentrations - California, Chicago, Baltimore. California - Been there (visiting). Beautiful. Economics and their wacky politics turn me off. Chicago - Hey, been there, done that! Baltimore - Everything I can google up on it is good. Unemployment is lower than most places. Median incomes are higher. Flickr browsing is phenominal. Looks like Chicago times 5. | ||

I've never known anyone that actually WANTED to move to Baltimore...lmao I assume Chicago is controlled by the Democrats. If you're unhappy with that situation in Illinois you won't be any happier about it here. Baltimore - "The City that Bleeds"... only liberals walk around oblivious to the social decay around them. spent my last 6 months in the navy on a reserve tincan at the ship yard back in 79. for me there was a lot of cool stuff around the area and close to a lot of great places but driving through there and washington last year kind of bummed me out. not one for traffic. especially traffic that runs at 30 mph going down 95. | ||

You can't find anything bad about Baltimore?? Seriously?? Rent "The Wire." B'more doesn't even compare to Chicago (my humble opinion, of course). I can't really find a reason to spend more than a day at a time there... catch a ball game, walk around and eat some crabs at the harbor, stroll through the aquarium... that's really about it! | ||

wow I live in the city and I hate the Mayor the city gov't and the crime BUT.....its all about the location. there are some neat places to ride and go all around Baltimore that's what makes me happy. Oh yeah Orioles suck but the Ravens Rock. Only time I hang at the inner harbor is after a Ravens Game I go for Mexican food at the harbor, a nice way to wait for all of the non city folk to go home. | ||

well lets put it this way I stay away for the lower end shopping centers. I live right on the city county line so I go out of the city for gas fillups, grocerys, stuff like that. Only time I walk in my neighborhood is to go vote at a school a couple of blocks away. So I go about 10 miles out for food and gas or on my way home from work. My house I don't leave open like you could in the past years. A lot of the criminals are opportunistic ones so if they see you aren't paying attention or leave your house unlocked there is a chance they'll try. the good things are all of the places you can visit and ride or commute to and from work. Commuting I have 3 major roads that go North and South and about 5 that go east and west, plus all of the back roads to travel. 2 weekends ago I was at Summit Point for the day watching races this is about 138 miles away or ride to the Eastern shore and visit Hooper's Island and parks out there, thats a day's ride, and any surrounding state you want to ride to, Like Gettysburg, Pa all day trips. | ||

preferences Not North East Baltimore, or North west North Central Baltimore is more pricey. South east if you live on the water is nice along eastern Blvd. I live in south baltimore south of the stadiums there are going to be good and bad pockets anywhere in the city. If you are planing to commute to a job south of the city then don't live north or west off of 695 of the city traffic can be horrendous this what you where looking for? | ||

I have lived in Baltimore most of my life and I WANT OUT! It's true the unemployment here is better than most places but that's because the various governments are the major employers here. That ensures a super-majority of Democrats in almost all offices and that will never change. If that's a plus for you, then great. The roads in my part of Baltimore County SUCK. The traffic SUCKS. The taxes SUCK. As others have said, Baltimore City has some nice places to visit but it is a very dangerous place and you can easily walk from a good place to a bad place if you don't know what you are doing. If you really want to move to Maryland, Harford County is just north of Baltimore and the riding roads are very nice and the taxes much lower. Cecil County even more so. The problem is, if you live up there and work around Baltimore (or Washington) you have a long and lousy commute. I go from Baltimore County to PG County every day and it stinks. Sorry to be so negative but if you have the whole world as your oyster and can move anywhere, I can't think of any reason why you should move here. | ||

Lived there for 2+ years, $$$ forced me out but moving back ASAP (probably April). Greatest city in the world. It's a blue collar, eccentric east coast city. Its got its drug/crime problems but its got the nicest people, the coolest accent and the best food around. Bmore people are proud of their country, their city and their state. Love the O's (even if they suck) and the Ravens (who don't suck). It's cheaper than D.C. and defintley less snooty. Visit Eastern Ave, Greektown, Hampden, Dundalk, Essex, Towson and Catonsville. Have a crabcake sandwich or chicken box. Visit the block for fine gentlemen's entertainment. Chug a Natty Boh at Looney's Pub. Take a walk down Boston street next to the "warter". The inner harbor is NOT Bmore in any way except its located in the city. Ferris_von_bueller, how is this post eliciting anything political? It's a Union city yes. On commutes, I don't drive into the city here either anymore unless I have to. Trains in & out are just so much easier. Surely, they have public transit in and out too? | ||

Fells Point is a cool waterfront neighborhood, typical of "urban renaissance" efforts all around the country: gritty, waterfront area with old market hall/square, great urban architecture and yes, last time I was there, a few homeless guys wanted to sell me park-n-pay tickets or ask for a handout... no big deal, it's a city. Baltimore still has room to improve, but that means that it's not all happy-faced and fake and plastic like so many of the urban "extreme makeover" projects end up being. Baltimore is not a "festival marketplace." It's an honest, blue-collar town, home of Johnny Unitas, Brooks Robinson, a working port, some crappy roads but easy access to excellent ones. If you live out in the 'burbs, then go live anywhere in America, since it's all the same KWalTargmartSamsPriceHomeLowes-chooseyourfavoriteS upermarket/shoppingmall anywhere you go. For a good city, you could do a whole lot worse than Boldemort. | ||

Some of my friends work down in DC they are Coast Guard and Navy they take the train in. Then a few drive in as well If you live north of the city get ready to go thru one of the 2 tunnels during rush hour. It seems more crashes happen up north of the city too for some reason. Going North into Harford county for some good riding into Pa on an early Sunday morning is fun going thru the city too early in the morning. There are jobs around the city there are 2 large military Bases, NSA and NASA here and JHUAPL where I work are still hiring. these work places all outside of the city but have a good commute on most days, and heck if you're on a Motorcycle who cares about the major roads! | ||

I live in Rockville and work in DC.... traffic in the DC/Baltimore corridor is CRUSHING! Lots of buddies that live in "Bawlmer" and I like visiting the city. It is a true blue collar town, but LOCK UP THE BIKE. Bike theft can be a problem. When are you thinking about making the move? | ||

I'm thinkin bout Cali again too... I need to take back what I said about their politics. It's their green policies with cars and testing that is off-putting, but that's really just hassle factor. but LOCK UP THE BIKE. Bike theft can be a problem Is this in Baltimore city proper? I've stopped taking my bike into the city here too. | ||

I would lock it up or take the car in to the inner city. Lot of parking garages don't except bikes anyway. They do have bike parking, metered, down at the inner harbor. | ||

We very recently travelled through Baltimore on our way to Rockville on the Amtrak Acela and all we saw was ghetto.They seem to have their own style of row house type though,equally run down.Just a New Englander's observation | ||

I don't have a couch to offer my house is run by dogs and cats. But I could give you info on a clean cheap place to stay in Howard County Maryland. There is a motel named Browns Motel right off of route 40 in Ellicott City. The location is good, not in the inner city but close to it and across from a nice state park http://brownsmotel.net/ | ||

We're 40 minutes west of Balt, in Frederick. I like the area - rural(ish), great roads, not too congested. Still a bedroom community for DC...but a nice place. If you're looking for something to do while you're in the area, drop me a note. I work weekends, but can at least give you some ideas on roads/rides and stuff  |
