Ok, some background. Before I joined the Army I was well over 300 lbs (Don't know the exact because I didn't start weighing myself until I really got into my weight loss routine.) I entered the Army and at current I now weigh 220 lbs. I lift weights religiously, I focus on my sit ups and I focus on my aerobic. My problem is I have the apron of skin around my mid section. This is a leftover part of when I was overweight. Now, due to my muscle build I will not make weight, so I must be taped. I've passed it each time, but my concern is this apron of skin on my mid section. I've heard that the military offers cosmetic surgery for people like me who have this problem. Does anyone know anything about that and can offer me more info to look into?

I would check with the NCO that runs the Army Weight Control Program in your unit. If they can't help ask your 1SG.

I'm curious. What is and what does "taping" do to help you make your weight?

Taping is what the Army uses to find our body fat %. That is used should you not meet the weight for your height on the screening chart.

As for the NCO of the weight control program. Well, I'm the alternate and I can't seem to find much on it. I figure since I have to do my phase 2 of my med exam for Green to Gold on monday I might ask the doc about it.

Cataract, what post are you stationed at? This is something that your unit PA *sickcall* would have to get you a referral through TriCare.

If you are do not have a unit PA, make an appointment with your primary care provider and explain this to them. Your unit leadership is powerless to do anything about it other than afford you the proper support to seek out this sort of treatment.

Hope this helps, if you need anymore help send me a PM. I had a Soldier once who had the exact same issue, he was huge before he came in and lost a crap ton of weight and he had a lot of loose skin. He never had any surgery for it but he filled out and put on tons and tons of muscle through some body building. I know he still has issues with it even today.

Our QA LPO at Offutt AFB always had trouble passing the tape. He actually started doing various neck workouts to increase the size of his neck. The way the Navy tapes people, the bigger your neck is the bigger you're allowed to be at the midsection. Maybe the same thing would work for the Army?

Same neck factor for the Army.

Geforce, I'm stationed at Schriever AFB. So I guess I'll bug my primary provider for that. See what I can come up with. I'm told if I tell them that the excess skin causes me problems wearing my gear that would help in getting this. Who knows. Worse they can tell me is no and I have to go another route.

I just really would like to not have to worry each and every freaking time a tape comes around.

I know E9s and E8s that have been taped since they were young bucks. Just part of the game sadly. As long as pass you have nothing to fear.

I got taped every single time from the time the Army implemented until about 1 month before I retired...15 or 16 years total.

There should be a way to have something done through your primary care provider. I had a female Soldier have cosmetic procedures done to enhance her own health "reduction wise" so there should be a way for a male Soldier to do the same.

Keep asking if you are told no from the first doc.

That's my plan Rotor. I just want to make it so I don't keep worrying about this crap each and every time. Hell, I tape myself at home just to be sure I'm still good.

If that doesn't work out for you there used to be an option to go and get a quarterly water displacement test that will replace your tape, or it used to be that way. While at the Pentagon in the early 90's I got into body building then full contact football teams that played for Walter Reed and I went from 170lbs to 230lbs hitting the pasta and the weights hard. The tape wasn't ever a problem, but I was able to go once a quarter to Walter Reed and get a water displacement and I didn't have to be taped after that. Just a thought.
