just sold my xd-40 & am looking to upgrade.
i fondled both of them today and prefer the feel of the s&w. (and i wanted the xdm) anybody have one? problems?
glocks are not an option for me, terrible natural point of aim.
this is for home defense and occasional zombie hunting tactical action..

I own an S&W M&P 45 because Glocks point way too high- I need a grip that points naturally like a 1911. The M&P 45 has excellent ergonomics, perfect reliability, great accuracy and mild recoil. I also think it's much more aesthetically pleasing than Springfield's imported XD line. Both are proven, modern tactical side arms- but I prefer the Smith.

Oh- I also prefer a good old .45 ACP over anything else out there, but the .40 S&W should work too.

I have the H&K USP Compact and really like it. The USP is great as well.

If I were going full size, I'd probably look strongly at the Beretta PX4 Storm.

I shot one and REALLY liked the feel of it and the grip options are plentiful to give you a good customized feel.

I shot it back to back with a Kimber .45, and while it wasn't the nail driver the Kimber was, it was not far off.

A friend has the M&P .40. Both he and I love it. Fits me to a T. A very natural fit for my hands. He is very happy with it.

Go to a well stocked shop that has a range and rent them both. Like a bike demo, you only really know till you shoot it.

The Smith is made in the US and the XD(M) is made in Croatia if that is a concern. Both have had some really good reviews and Smith has cracked the cop market w/the M&P the last few years.

Personally, I'd get a nice steel framed CZ75/85. No tupperware for me.

i have both the M&P .40 as well as the XDM .40 and they are both great. I found the XDM is the better one. It groups better and carrys more ammo and is safer to carry. The M&P is no slouch and if it weren't for more safety features on the XDM, i might carry the Smith b/c i believe its lighter.

I really like my XD-M! It is just really natural from a pointing and handling point. I've run 500+ round through mine and zero malfunctions with all sorts of loads.

I like it much, much better than my Glock 27 or my Ruger P95. I also have the Walter PPS in .40 and 9mm which is GREAT for CCW.

YRMV but I really like mine.

Colt 1911 for me
Mine is probably 40 years old and still functions flawlessly with any and all ammo I have ever shot thru it.
Yep, for me, Colt got it right almost 100 years ago.

Iam really curious about how the walther PPS handles. Its supposed to be slim and easy to carry concealed.

I have to agree with the other XDM fans here.
When I was looking at 40's, I tried a S&W, Glock, HK, Ruger and a couple of others.
The XDM was the most accurate the quickest.
By that I mean I didn't have to compensate, just point and shoot accurately.
The one I liked the least was the Glock.

Do what 4Cammer said, go to a range and shoot your top picks, it will be time and money well spent.

You may also want to fondle a SIG P229, another fine piece.

The PPS being a sub-compact still handles great, quick and points well w/o the issues I've felt with the Glock 27. I like the action of the PPS MUCH better than the Glock. Any of the sub-compacts will be more of a handful in .40 than 9mm but I am not trying to shoot 1,000's of rounds through it.

I have shot the XDM also. Nice but I liked the M&P better. I also wouldn't rule out Taurus. They make a nice .40 S&W. I have a PT-145 Millennium Pro. I love it.

Our department issued hand guns have all been switched out to the M&P this last year, they are great for natural fit and have adjustable grips, which is nice and good for accuracy. I wouldn't want to carry one though, field stripping is a bit tricky, and considering ever having to strip it if I was under stress... I would probably just be better off going straight to a back-up weapon. I think I would have to practice the take down process until I could do it with my eyes shut, and even then it would be iffy... if I wanted to carry the Smith.

I carry a Glock on and off duty because of its reliability and the ease of field stripping. Sold my 40 Beretta Mini Cougar when I became weapon's certified, I was more accurate with it but it didn't have hi-cap mags. and it can be stripped too easily, just like the 96 and 92models (seen Jet Li do that in Lethal Weapon? How about Jackie Chan? Not just a movie stunt, it's pretty easy with a little practice).

I just have to shoot more with the Glock since it points high for me too, but my accuracy gets better the more time I spend shooting it.

All that said, I kinda wish I had gone with the XD, it's point and shoot accuracy is a lot more natural for me and take down is not too complicated. Way too much invested in duty holsters concealed holsters to switch out now.

I will vouch for Fat on the H&K USP series. My right hand was crushed a few years ago in a car accident. I can still easily fire my USP .45 with +P rounds one handed and it feels like silk.

That's why I live in the country and have my private shooting range set up. I am mostly set up for handgun or shotgun but I have been known to sight in my AR or SKS ;+}

and the winner is.... m&p 40!
have to say i love it. it shoots better than i do and after 250 rounds it hasn't had a single problem. and that grip... oh baby is it sweet!
i don't plan on carrying it (i have a kahr for that) but a tactical holster is in my near future.
i did check out the para g.i. 45 also. that may be my next one as i plan to do some action shooting next year

Hey Nuke.... if you get the XD-M it comes with 2 hi cap mags, 3 backstraps, a kydex double mag pouch and....... A REAL NICE tactical holster.

I almost forgot, a real nice case, lock and bore brush. IIRC, I paid under $500 for my .40 OTD. How much did you pay for that M&P .40? ;+} But MSRP is $679 (XD-M) and $719 for the M&P.

Soooo, the winner is still TBD!

the xdm was $530 and the m&p was $480. both on sale at the local store.
s&w= no holster or mag pouch.
after coming off a regular xd, and comparing how they feel in my hand, i thought i'd give the smith a chance. esp after reading what i could find on the cop forums reviews. they seemed to really like it. the guy i sold my xd to really loves it though so i'm having a little sellers remorse lol
the one thing i'm not happy with though, and you can all call me crazy, the new m&p has a safety. the old one did not. i really liked not having a safety to think about on the xd, just another thing on the piece you know?

Not all M&P models have the external safety. Needless, I agree.

my old M&P.45 didn't have any safety, including do magazine safety. So if you drop a mag in a struggle and have one loaded, it would still fire!

The M&P series can be ordered with or without an external manual safety, an internal safety lock, and magazine disconnect. My M&P 45 is the "slick" version with no external safety. I think the internal safety lock is a gimmick invented by Taurus to make liberals happy, but I like the magazine disconnect- got used to it years ago with a Browning High Power. Because of the Smith's reliability, durability and comfort, it goes everywhere I go, but I must admit I prefer my Colt Series 80 Lightweight Commander- it truly is a piece of art (and is treated accordingly).

Which pistols out there can still fire w/o the magazine inserted? I went to the firearm depo in the area and noticed a warning decal on the slide of an m&p that it can still be fired w/o a magazine. Kinda struck my curiosity: )

WOW, whats with all the Glock hate? I have both the M&P 40 and .40 Glock. I like both. I shoot a little better with the Glock which suprised me because I have small hands and the small grips on my M&P. The M&P is a better quality weapon I think, but my GLOCK is soo very tried and true. I have not had This problem with the M&P but other Officers told me to watch for rusting on the barrel. I have had snow packed 2 in. up my Glocks barrel and no rusting.

Both my M&P and Glock will fire w/o the mag.

A glock 17 was my first pistol. It fit my hand ok but not like XD does. The glock has a superior slide finsh IMO. The tennifer coating is diamond hard and never seemed to need cleaning. An XD9 I had developed some rust on the slide. No rust on the 45 yet.

I do prefer the frame design of the XD over the 2nd gen glock I had. The slide rails are considerably beefier. I love the grip safety of the XD in addition to the firing pin indicator and loaded chamber indicator both of which can be felt as well as seen.

Lots of nice pistols to choose from these days. The Beretta storm is another one. When looking at the M&P long ago I didnt care for the way it broke down compared to my XD. Its a nice pistol though. Its hard to go wrong with any of the pistols that have been mentioned.

The one thing I really don't like about my M&P is that the slide is soo smooth that I can't tell I have lock back just by feel like I could my Glock. Really would only be an issue in almost black out situations, but I am a third shifter.

Not to high jack but. . . how do people fell about the Steyr AUG A3? Been thinking of making it a X-mas gift to myself. (Strictly for when the zombies come of course.)
