I use CCleaner, Windows Defender, Registry Cure, SpyBot S&D, Bit DEfender and AdAware SE. I've been good for 2 years on my laptop. The kids having their own helps tremendously! | ||

Wow, this Trojan is over a year and a half old, Norton antivirus protected computers have been immune to this since January 2008! http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup. jsp?docid=2008-011616-5036-99 At least if you do get infected its easy to remove. | ||

Froggy is right. Symantec is the way to go. l too had AVG Free and the virus infected my computer. Nothing could save it but a reload. The AVG Free didn't even slow it down. Spend the money - buy the Norton 360 3.0 and surf safe. | ||

I hated norton... I wanted an anti-malware tool, and they kept forcing an upsell to a highly invasive full security suite, that then proceeded to make my systems run like crap. AVGFree has kept a pile of systems I help maintain virus free for years. Addware is still a threat though. Running something like Bluecoat K9 web filtering software is also a good idea and offers a ton of protection. Most malware is a small downloader that then gets the big evil payload, and the big evil payload typically comes from some known internet "bad neighborhoods". I check the webfiltering software logs periodically to make sure the kids are not getting slimed, and am amazed at how many potential malware distribution site blocks are logged. | ||

Actually no its not!  Jaimec, all the antivirus companies name everything with a different name, I am not even sure if the one you posted about and the one in the first post are even the same virus. Symantec doesn't have anything listed for "Zeus". Uggg.... whatever, I don't even run an AV on my Vista computer anyway. Also for what its worth, we have no reported infections here at work, 2300 computers covered by McAfee enterprise. | ||

My only Window$ machine is a VM so if it does get infected it's easily blown away and fixed. That being said just say no to bloatware and if at all possible skip right on past the Micro$oft counter. | ||

I've used Avast! (perfect for "Talk Like A Pirate Day") for years. Completely unintrusive, and it's saved my bacon on a couple of occasions. It's also free for personal use. I love the scanning engine... unlike that obnoxious Symantec crap we have at work that takes over your machine whether you want it or not and drags everything to a crawl, the Avast scanner installs as your screen saver. When you walk away and leave your computer unattended, THAT'S when it scans your system. Also, real-time protection from E-Mail, web browsing, etc. Highly recommended. Norton Anti-Virus USED to be an excellent defense, but it's become the most obnoxious piece of bloatware I've seen besides Windows itself in the past few years. | ||

AVG free sucks! had a trojan it wouldnt ditch. now run Kaspersky on the PC's. with daily scan and hourly updates. But mainly use the MAC for browsing...... Thats about the best anti-virus ive found :-) | ||

I removed all email and IM software from the machine years ago. I use webmail exclusively. So many of these viruses and trojans exploit email and IM apps in order to report their ill-gotten info. That plus a hardware firewall and Norton 360 seem to have prevented any issues. I really like the Norton 360, all in one, self updating, self scanning, pretty much a total no brainer for me. It does use resources, but with 2GB RAM, it doesn't seem to be an issue. Am I missing something? (Message edited by blake on September 22, 2009) | ||

I use Avira free. I have used nothing but free Anti-Virus for YEARS. I've not once had a virus. But then again, I know what I'm doing and scan using Spybot, Malwarebytes, and a couple of others every now and again for safe measure. Nothing to do with me, honest! (when we started a business and called it Trojan-Horse it was named after a Greek legend and not a computer virus  I don't think such things existed back then! Maybe I should change the name now that it has such ghastly connotations. |
