I belong to a Super Duty diesel forum and they have a small but growing WIKI formatted article page that has specific how to topics on it which detail how to do a specific job with pics and part numbers, etc. It is very useful instead of having to search all over the place or ask everyone what they recommend. Do you guys think this would be a good thing for us? I think it may have been brought up before but can't recall (I'm getting old). I know everyone "should" own a shop manual, and I do, but there are a lot of folks that don't and I think it would be very useful. Torque values, tool sizes, tips, tricks, clear pics, etc would be great. Just a thought. I was thinking of suggesting it to Blake. It doesn't have to be WIKI. It could be in the KV which exists already. Thoughts?

I have always thought that as well. Sticky threads in the KV for such topics like:

How to change isolators
Main drive seal replacement
How to check a coil
How to rebuild forks
etc etc

Great idea Odie.

+ on that.
Froggy did a detailed "How to change your Oil" thread with step by step photos.

I can contribute with a "How to change the tires on a Blast" since I have to take them back off and get them remounted.
I'll take pictures.

One main issue is of liability.

Since this is a privately owned forum, it would be Blakes liability if something happened.

Ask Blake, he may have a way around it or may not.

I would think a "this is one way of doing it" type of disclaimer should suffice. I'm not a lawyer but I would think that what you talk about could be abused by anyone about anything you see on a TV commercial or a sitcom, documentary, etc. I don't do a lot of things by the exact steps in the manual.

We do it all the time. Someone comes on with questions and we direct them to the best of our abilities. If you really want to know the "proper way" to do things then get a manual.
but not everyone has one or wants to get one if they're only going to do little maintenance items like changing fluids, plugs, tire, ect.

A big Disclaimer "The views and advice expressed do not always reflect the views of the owner and management of BadWeB." should be enough.

I suggested a wiki a while back, and started working on one, but never quite got it to work right. I could try it again.

Again, I was just using what I have seen and used on the Super Duty forum as an example. It could be in whatever format that is easy for Blake to use and maintain. I think it would be preferable that the articles are just that- how to articles and they don't turn into a thread that has 20 pages from three years ago that you have to wade through to get to the real article as people add their 2 pennies worth. That's what we have to do now.

I have seen these on my ranger forum and Subaru forums in the past, the one on my ranger forum is the best, it is easy to find anything you need. please not the disclaimer at the top of the page I think this is what Odie was talking about.

We have them in the Porsche forum. They are done as "articles" that members contribute. Other vote on them, essentially grading "credibility".

Some of the members are incredibly skilled.

For some off us that don't know much it would be very helpful. I found the "how to change your oil" by Froggy very helpful. As far as the manual, I have one but sometimes I need things put in easier terms for it to get into my thick skull...

I love the manual, but sometimes its vague, doesn't always list tools/socket sizes, has wrong torque specs, and the B&W pictures sometimes make you wonder if your looking at a wiring harness or a sonogram.

Hence why I made the picture guide from last time I did my oil change.

And the manual doesn't tell you helpful things like "use a funnel to catch the draining oil and direct it into your catch pan instead of all over your muffler"
Some of us just have to figure that out for ourselves.

But then how will you lubricate the muffler bearings?

Well, I would say that, based on reactions so far, that these type of articles would be of benefit to all the BadWeb members. Hopefully Blake will drop in to read this. If not, I will PM him tonight. I think Courts' comment about the Porsche members voting and deeming the article worthy makes good sense. That way others with viable input can speak up and the article can ultimately be more helpful than adding tips and tricks on as time goes by then everything gets out of control. A final review then "published" for all to use.

Swampy, the thumper forum is junk compared to a wiki.

Court, would you mind sharing a link to the Porsche setup? I want to see what software they are running, see if I can reverse engineer it for us.

Court, thank you, that is a very nice and well done site. It looks like everything they are using is part of the vBulletin software. Blake has been pondering a switch to that forum software, I just see it as one more reason too. : )

We've had vBulletin installed on the server for over a year. There are issues that need work. I was ready to send thousands of dollars to a vBulletin expert to translate the entire BadWeB forum over to vB, but he turned out to be a total flake.

If anyone knows of a professional programmer who is familiar with vB and is willing to bid on a BadWeB conversion to vB, please let me know.

A wiki is a website that uses wiki software, allowing the easy creation and editing of any number of interlinked Web pages, using a simplified markup language or a WYSIWYG text editor, within the browser.[1][2] Wikis are often used to create collaborative websites, to power community websites, for personal note taking, in corporate intranets, and in knowledge management systems.
