This one puts our work here on BadWeB into perspective! "The pen is mightier than the sword." The Saying: THE PEN IS MIGHTIER THAN THE SWORD. Who Said It: Edward Bulwer-Lytton When: 1839 The Story behind It: In Act II of Bulwer-Lytton's play Richelieu, Cardinal Richelieu learns of a plot against him contrived by a friend and confidant, the monk Joseph. Since as a priest he could not challenge the monk to physical combat, Richelieu issued a written statement which contains the following: Beneath the rule of men entirely great, The pen is mightier than the sword. Bulwer-Lytton was not the only one, nor was he the first, to have the thought. The Greek poet Euripides, who died about 406 B.C., said, "The tongue is mightier than the blade." In 1600 Shakespeare had Rosencrantz in Hamlet say that "... many wearing rapiers are afraid of goosequills." In 1621 Robert Burton wrote The Anatomy of Melancholy, in which he stated: "From this it is clear how much more cruel the pen may be than the sword." Also preceding Bulwer-Lytton was Thomas Jefferson, who in 1796 sent a letter to Thomas Paine in which he wrote: "Go on doing with your pen what in other times was done with the sword." http://www.trivia-library.com/b/origins-of-sayings -the-pen-is-mightier-than-the-sword.htm |

17. The American Revolution would never have happened with gun control. Actually, the revolution started with gun control. It's been a while since I read the history, but if I remember correctly, the battles of Lexington and Concorde happened when the British went after weapon stockpiles. |

This one puts our work here on BadWeB into perspective! "The pen is mightier than the sword." The second amendment is the one which guarantees all the rest, most especially the right to place the mighty pen to parchment. Both are necessary to exercise and maintain one's freedom. Only slaves are not allowed to defend themselves, as only slaves are censured. |

"The pen is mightier than the sword." This previous statement could also be equated with more modern forms of communication such as television, cable, satellite, and even movies - look how guns, and gun owners are portrayed. Hollywood and main-stream media are writing gun ownership out of "normal" people's lives. Brady and others have not brought on their restrictions alone. I bought a handgun (and learned to at least shoot straight) years before going into law enforcement. I began to feel it was important to exercise my right as a citizen, before it was taken away. I think others should do the same. It usually takes the police too long to respond "to save the day", even if for no worse reason than traffic congestion. Citizens need to defend themselves. |

#17. Didn't that happen BECAUSE of gun control, or at least the attempt of? This thread needs pics. (Not my gun, I have the G model and extended mags.)
