I tried doing a search on the Garmin Quest 2, but I got back a blank page, so I gave up and thought I'd just ask the question. I have found a couple of places selling the Quest 2 at a discounted price since it is discontinued. I'd really like the Zumo, but my current economic situation makes me reluctant to spend that kind of money. So, for those who have had the Quest 2, what did you think of it?

Thanks

you can pick-up a Quest 2 on Ebay for really cheap. I have the Quest 1 but it doesn't have the maps already preloaded. My gps is ok but I've been looking into getting a Quest 2.

and yes, the Zumo 550 is the best but costs too much for my taste.

I have a Quest 2 for about 3 years now. If you get it you will not have any updates for it. Mine started to remind me about updates this year so I hooked it up to the computer and went to Garmin web-site and there are no updates to load on it. I'm thinking they aren't making them anymore.
2 good things about it though,
1. its waterproof and fits in the old Buell hard wire kit they sold for the ULY.
2. you can enter the addresses in it for more detailed directions. The Quest one you can find the cities, no addresses.
I have both They also have a bicycle mount for it. easy install and it has to run off of battery power. K

Not true. I used to use mine all the time for addresses. Addresses suck anyway, coordinates are the only reliable way to plot a destination.

I have a Q2 on my Uly (and a mount on the S2, and one that floats between the cars). I love it. As noted above, it's waterPROOF - I've been out in drown-a-duck rainstorms and had no issues - and it has streetlevel maps loaded for the entire US, where the Q1 you had to re-load for each region. I also like the Quest's size compared to the Zumo.

My main reason for having it is long trips to areas I don't know (duh), but also for when I'm out on the Uly "exploring" and the weather starts to turn. The "Route Home" button rocks in situations like that. No touch screen, no XM, no bluetooth....and I'm just fine with that : )

I have had mixed results with mine.
its small and functional, but poorly documented and if set wrong it can make for some interesting routes

DAHIK,

it fits well and the mount is pretty well thought out. a refurb unit is cheap, if you cant swing a zumo it should be on the list...

Very happy with my Quest - it's tough and very waterproof! Picked it up on ebay for $60, bought the newest maps and software from Garmin for $80, and a RAM mount for the mirror perch, and I'm all set.

Quest 2 holds all the maps, but is a bit slower than Quest 1 at recalculating routes on the fly. My Quest 1 has been GREAT as a GPS for the last couple years, but if you want bluetooth/XM radio and all the other bells and whistles, look elsewhere.

Babired - My Quest 1 does addresses as well.

Any idea if the Uly hard wire kit works for the original Quest as well? Anyone have a part number for that kit?

I was also fine playing Oregon Trail on an Apple II with the stick figures and "green" screen. Then I discovered Duke Nukem 3d on a DOS box and the rest was history ; )

As for the address thing, not sure, I don't have my unit on me, but it was straight forward, can't imagine it being much different than the quest 2.

the Q1 will do addresses,
its on the find menues, you can look under the route planner IIRC it has an address option. I find that Zipcodes help

and

that numeric addresses that have changed recently may cause problems...

if you can score a boxed "refurbished" quest for under 100$ its a deal.. a ram mount and a cradle and your set..

Babaird (and others), if you can't do "to address" routing, you are running off the built in base map. That has everything that is state route or larger for the whole US, but isn't routable by address.

Install the garmin mapsource software to your PC, highlight 110 megabytes worth of regions (about 3 to 5 states, depending on how dense they are), and sync that to the quest. You can then route to addresses on those maps.

The Q2 has all those detailed maps pre loaded, so if you don't like messing with moving data around, that's the slam dunk deal.

The two big features the Quest 1 lacks that I wish I had are first the detailed basemaps for the whole US, and secondly that "diagonal" birds eye over the shoulder view of the route to be navigated. The quest just does the "straight down" map view. It works fine, but the diagonal view packs lots more information on the screen.

But the features that it *does* have far outweigh the lack.

First, as noted, it is water proof. Not just "splashable" waterproof, but rather "turn it on, drop it in 3 feet of water, and come back an hour later to fish it out" water proof (literally).

Second, it allows me to create multi point (many points) routes. So when I want to plot a back road trip from Cincinnati to Deals Gap, I can pick one that weaves through the prettiest and twistiest back roads of kentucky. It will stitch all the waypoints together and keep the route intact. The newer units just ask for a destination, and will continually auto route you there. Fine for the family minivan, but not something that has any business on a motorcycle (IMHO).

It also has a built in lithium ion battery that'll run for 10 hours on a charge if you let it manage the backlight (it turns on the backlight when you start getting close to a turn you have to make). Another nice feature when "road entropy" starts messing with your wiring half way through a big road trip.

It's also easy to buy a cheap RAM mount cradle (under $15) and hack up a 5v regulator with parts cut from the included (Q1 but not Q2) AC adapter. That gives you a $20 option to have power from the bike, and you still have the car adapter (not waterproof) for the car. Or just buy the $70 garmin motorcycle kit.

Not the only choice, but a quest II with reasonably update map data for $150 is pretty tough to beat for a motorcycle.

Prior - the Uly kit was a Q1. I went with a reman Q2 and pieced together the bracketry/wiring from the Buell kit to put it all together on my Uly. I went to Garmin.com and bought a second cradle and "motorcycle wiring harness" that I hardwired to the gauges of my S2; I mounted the cradle on an old FLH CB mic bracket.

The only thing I wish I had from the Buell kit was the dealer location preload in the POI.

I've also learned that if you're preplanning a route (i.e. before you leave the house), it's COOOOL to get directions from mapquest.com and upload them directly into the Q2 with the included USB cable (just remember to upload them as waypoints, not as a route...a "route" gives you a straight line between the 2 points). Its also easier to actually type the addresses that way, than with the cursor/joystick button....
