Lets say, hypothetically speaking of course, a local HD/Buell dealer took in a 07 Ural Patrol in on trade for something. Lets also say that I received a phone call from one of the employees informing me of this, knowing that I have had the itch for one for quite a while now. What would one look for when checking out the said vehicle? How are they reliably? Maintenance? Common faults/weaknesses? It would be used primarily for winter riding, when the ice takes over and prevents 2 wheel vehicles from staying upright. What would one hypothetically expect to pay for this?

Freaky... I saw a Ural for the first time in years the other day...

From what I remember they were not known for their quality control, but I don't what common issues were.

Would this - hypothetically - be a two wheel drive, or one wheel drive?

Froggy- read this ride report on advrider:

http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=35 4338&highlight=ural

The guy picked up a new Ural at their headquarters in Redmond, WA last year and rode it all over the USA, posting daily. He had one significant problem after a few weeks, the cylinder/head retention studs started to pull out of the block on one side. He made it to a dealer without a problem. They repaired using something like Time-serts (on both cylinders). IIRC that's the only significant problem he had.

From what I gather, they take a lot of tender loving care (regular bolt retorquings, valve adjustments, etc.) but they are reasonably reliable bikes at this point.

Reading this report will give you a very good idea of what it's like to live with one.

the place in redmond wa. is right out the back door from where i work. at break & lunch i go over there and talk with the dudes putting them together. really sweet bikes. the 2 wheel drive is totally killer. last winter we had a pretty good snow fall and some of the guys that own them rode them to work then proceeded to rip around the parking lot. the camo one is really cool.

I have a Gear up and all I can say is just buy it! The newer they are the more reliable they are - but that is all relative. With that I can tell you that my 2006 has not had any problems - but it also doesn't get used much as it lives at my cabin. They hold their value more than you think since there are few used ones that hit the market - if you can get an 07 for that price , more the better. A coworker's wife bought an 05 las fall for 7700 ( I think) in Phoenix and flew out with her Mom and drove it back to Indy - not a single problem ( assuming going over 65 isn't a problem for you). They pretty much go anywhere and you can load the snot out of them.

I will send a PM to Newfie, that lucky bastard.

Ulynut, its a 2WD. A 1WD would be like a 1 cylinder Buell, and we all know what happens to them.

Hughlysses, I have been reading that, its like 70 pages or something, I am at 15. Gonna be here a while : )

I saw it in person, the thing is nice, its comfortable too, and looks brand new. My issues now are storage, I got no room for it. Then the next issue is money. The timing really sucks, I just bought the CR and don't have the extra dough. Perhaps I can trade in my Blast? I can't do that, its getting 85mpg. : (

Buddy of mine had one for a while- I got to fool around the dealership tarmac, drove it around for a while in reverse with a buddy in the sidecar just for shits and giggles.

Sidehacks are kewl, but you'll have to get your head around the dynamics of driving one.

+1, the East German military version with full livery. Talk about a head-turner!
