On 4/10/06, My Buell XB9SX was stolen from my carport. A policeman in Hattiesburg, MS called me this past saturday to tell me they had him. He didn't know how long they had Roscoe and the only reason he was calling me now was because they were cleaning out the building for renovation and found him.
I called GEICO and talked to the lady who had handled the claim and she said that if they can prove the the police had my bike between the the date of the theft and the date GEICO paid on the claim, I get my bike back and the Hattiesburg PD owes GEICO the amount I was paid.
And yes, I want Roscoe back. I don't care what condition he's in. If they picked him up as quickly as I hope they did, he's probably in pretty good shape anyway.

So, please, think good thoughts for me, I need all the help I can get!

Thanks,

Bob

My thoughts at this particularly difficult time are with you and Roscoe.
May you and Roscoe be united again soon.

Wow, Hattiesburg... As a resident this is the 4th bike I know of that was stolen here. There are not that many here or are they getting them from out of town as well.

Good to hear just make sure you get it back before you tell HPD that they have to pony up the $$$ to gecko...

Nick

Mine was stolen in Jackson, roughly 90 miles from Hattiesburg.
Mums the word on on the HPD thing. I figure I'll just keep in touch with the GEICO rep and let them fry their bacon. They're much better at it than I am. =)

Bob

Hotspur: Maybe this is why I didn't get another one.

Man, with all these bike thefts, you guys need to get Webb Wilder, Private Eye (and electrifying artist) to come back to Hattiesburg and clean things up!

I swear, I think that boy done gone into hidin' or something. But, if he ever does play near here, you will see me there.
Getting back to my bike, though...=)
I will ask the HPD guy I've been talking to about this if it would be possible to come look at the ol' boy (hopefully not for the last time) and possibly take some pics.
To me, that would be worth a 180 mile round trip.

I'm confused about the money thing... If the insurance paid out on your bike to you, or the bank I assume, why should the police owe anything? If you get your bike and the cash besides, well that's called fraud.

It's only fraud if he lies.
So far it looks like he's been working with his insurance, not lying to them.
Can't say why the police would have to pay.

What were they doing with it all this time? They had the VIN# and could've traced it to it's rightful owner sooner.Fell through the cracks? Neglect?

Uhh,recieving stolen property?

I have heard before that sometimes a claim can put put in and you get some cash from it, then in some cases you also get the vehicle back. Its like win/win, I never knew how this could work. I mean, insurance businesses are in it for the $$ so why wouldnt they get the vehicle and sell it?

Bob,

Glad to meet another WW fan. He's touring right now; check out the schedule at http://www.webbwilder.com

I saw him in Savannah, GA a couple of years ago and here in Charleston, SC right before Christmas.

Yeah, I suppose if the ins. co is the one saying he can have the bike then it's probably okay. I still don't get the police needing to pay thing though... But if the bike was camped out in a building for a year, clean out the cobwebs and fire it up, right?

Glad your bike has been found Ned. I hope it all works out for you. I didn't mean to sound preachy or anything.

If the Police did have the bike between the time he was stolen and the time GEICO paid me and DIDN'T tell anybody they had it, then they weren't doing their job. If they HAD told GEICO in time then GEICO wouldn't have had to pay me.
If you were GEICO, wouldn't you want your money back if you could prove incompetence?

Wasn't thinking that way Bob, that does make sense.
Any word on when you might get the bike back?
Soon I hope.

I've learned from the HPD yesterday that my bike got picked up by a local auction company on Friday. I guess Miss Geico isn't going to pursue this.
There wasn't an answer at the auction company Monday afternoon, so I will call again today and see when they plan to auction Roscoe. I hope they haven't done so already.
