I have a 1500 dodge ram started having problems today. Started it up this afternoon to warm up. Went to leave and noticed my anti-lock brake light & regular brake light was on and stayed on. Drove two miles to the store shut truck off came back out lights didn't come back on. Drove about seven miles lights came back on and stayed on. Got to work shut off again started right back up lights stayed out for couple minutes than came back on. And i also noticed my speedo jumps back and fourth between 0 mph & 5 mph at a stop light or when its in park but seems to be working fine when im actually moving. Sorry so long but its kinda worries me. So if you have any ideas what this is please let me know.

Thanks, Clint D

check your battery voltage and or connections. check your brake fluid. don't think the fluid could have anything to do with the speedo though!

check your speed sensor in transmission and at the rear end.

+1 to what swampy said, also check your ABS sensors at the wheels.

Are these hard, expensive things to fix.

Remove it clean it. I believe it should generate a square wave form.

I'm unfamiliar with such a vehicle but with such limited information it sounds like your ABS pump is running intermittently.

If the light stays on when you are stationary from start up without having moved that would more likely indicate the system pressure is low probably because the pump hasn't done its job. A wheel sensor is unlikely to be the problem if you haven't moved.

Here's a simple test you can try.

Without the motor running pump the brake pedal about 20 times until the pedal goes hard. Once hard you've depleted the pressure in the system. Start the engine keeping your foot on the brake pedal. The pedal should go soft and fall to the floor with some resistance and the lights should go out. If they do the pump is running and the pedal should revert to its normal feel once you let it back up and use it normal. The system has pressured up.
If that's the case, and the problem seems not to be there, try the same test again once the problem shows up, if it does. You may find that if it does show up later, and you try this test, and it seems ok once the test is done, that could indicate you are looking in the right direction as you are provoking the intermittent nature of the problem and the system is trying to overcome it because you're making it do so. Basically, as you drive and use the brakes, you are depleting the system pressure. If the pressure doesn't come back up, the lights go on. You are trying to establish if it is a pressure related problem or not.

First thing I'd check is the ABS pressure switch. Trying to diagnose wheel sensor faults is difficult without the right diagnostic equipment. The sensors put out a millivoltage, which is best read with an analogue multimeter, but trying to effectively spin the wheel whilst up on a jack at road simulated speeds is not really an accurate enough way of measuring wheel sensor voltage.

although all of these are very good suggestions and are valid points the first thing i would check is the forward control module....famous in these truck for going bad. and they control all sorts of things you would never expext them to..are your brake lights on when the dash light is?

02 ram 1500 92,000 and two control modules

if it is this then its a easy 30 min fix

It was a rear wheel sensor.

Another thing I'd suggest doing is replacing the brake hydraulic fluid;
It's hygroscopic (means it attracts & absorbs water) when it gets cold it can then freeze, or worse under prolonged heavy braking, like with a trailer on down a long hill, it can boil, & presto no brakes.
