Personally, I think the pandemonium in Boston is funny as all hell. At first I thought the "devices, with wires and circuit boards and batteries" sounded pretty ominous. Then, I saw a picture of one and nearly wet myself thinking about the bozo's in bomb suits spending all day and $500,000 while creating panic in a major city to "safely detonate" them.

How'd you like to be those Boston bomb dudes at the next National bomb squad confrence....

Oh, and did you catch the press conference given by the two lackey's the cops arrested? That, in and of itself, was the funniest part!

dupe the entire Eastern Seaboard with a Lite Brite and 3 energizers and some speaker wire

This cat's on to something:

They oughta friggin plaster that city with "This is not a bomb" stickers.
The lack of common sense [everywhere today] is almost painful. But I
console myself with the fact, if there weren't stoopid people, I wouldn't

(edit: usually I would restrain myself from topics such as this, but this is taking it too far...)

It is a shame turner has decided to pay, they should not have to pay a penny...
They are not the reason people are so bloody stupid and paranoid, come on what in the hell is wrong with people nowadays?!?!

You can't even go to the beach at night or have a fire on the beach, why? Last time I checked sand and water did not burn too well.

If they lost money because the people are overly paranoid then too bad, its the peoples fault. They are paranoid by choice, or are stupid enough to fall for the governments scheme to scare people into submission...

Know why you can't have a fire on the beach anymore? Cause I think they're paranoid that you may create GLASS and cut yourself. That's just god damn retarded.

It is a shame Turner has decided to pay, I agree. If I were Ted, I wouldn't pay a God Damn dime. I'd have called the mayor of Boston and proceeded to chew his ear off for being a Jackball. Then told him that he's lucky I don't sue his ass for slander.

You know, with this amount of paranoia, we have literally the right to tackle some sorry SOB for having his pants hanging off his ass because, we aren't sure if within those baggy pants isn't some bomb. See, everytime I see one of these idiots, the'res always some wires coming out of his ass (rumor is, its an iPod or Mp3 player, but you never know, right?) and hell, they're usually on a form of transit (skateboard.) So, presumably they are some sort of mobile terrorist looking to blow themselves up and others around them. We should stop the enemy in their tracks, right? I even saw one putting up paper "fliers" on a telephone pole. Seems to me it's probably code used as a recruiting tool to get other young, no belt wearing, kids to do harm.

I'm almost embarassed at times that this is our smartest people in the entire country making these decisions to paralyze parts of the country for something that they didn't even take 4 minutes investigating before they called the bomb squad and put 3/4 of the ENTIRE country even remotely close to that very feeling we ALL had on 9/11.

All this crying wolf is gonna get our asses handed to us, sooner or later. We gotta get right, people. Get smart, brave, and perhaps use a tid bit of common sense.

I come from Oregon. You ever noticed something about cows? One cow could find a cow shaped piece of shade, head over there and all the other cows will follow, even thought there's not enough shade for more than one cow. When just 1 acre away is a patch of shade to cover them all. Sometimes, you just have to challenge authority and quit following the crowd. I'm actually disappointed in the City of Boston for charging these two clowns and ACCEPTING turner's money. They should have picked up their pride, appologized to the city of Boston and the United States, in general, and we would all be better for it.

I agree, scaring people into submission is just another one of the scare tactics. Just like our color coding system of fear. Where the hell did that thing go, anyway? Glad it's gone. Fox pops it up now and again. Fear mongers.

I suppose that's enough ranting, for now.

Most cities have ordinances against temporary signs. These ordinances are rarely enforced, yet the signs are technically illegal. I'm sure this is why Turner's lawyers advised them to settle with the city of Boston.

In court, they would be in the hands of the Judge, and that could end up a disaster depending on how big a stick the particular judge has up his ass.

Still funny, but its too bad the city of Boston will end up being responsible for another increase in my cable bill.

I doubt the fine for putting up a temporary sign would come to what they are paying, so I doubt that is th reason.

I don't care how big of a stick the judge or the prosecutor has up their collective asses, there is no way they could prove intent in this matter.

Uh, no. Sony (or someone - I can't remember who) did a street marketing campaign where they used chalk (yes, harmless washable chalk) ads on sidewalks & such and got fined in large fashion for unauthorized advertising in public spaces. Don't recall the amount, but I think it was quite larger than this example.

Intent has nothing to do with it...

Things aren't always taken as they are intended.

I agree, this was blown out of proportion and could have been handled better by the City of Boston and the media, but someone has to be financially responsible. Maybe we should send the bill to the mayor, the media and the dumb arses who called the police/bomb squad?

I would take slight paranoia over complacency. I used to be an embassy guard for 3 years. My first post was in Istanbul Turkey. We would react to a suspicious package left outside the embassy on almost a weekly basis. Due to the frequency, I admit that we became pretty complacent, but only about 2 years earlier our compound was subjected to rocket and mortar attacks, and only a few months later 2 of our embassies were bombed. It is much better to error on the side of caution. If not for nothing, it was good training for Boston's reactionary forces.

Eboos,
I gave you one star...and yes I have been responsible for the safety of others..Army Medic, Army Reserve Firefighter, LPN for the first two years of college on a telemetry floor, QRF 1/506th Camp Greaves in Korea,Deployment with the Big Red One in Bosnia,UN in Rwanda, 1/12 Cavalry Guantamo Bay, Brightstar '90 in Honduras and I think people that are that fearful to die will never live....and I think we have become a bunch of P(*&sy's. Scared that the sky will fall..let it fall I say, "safety Mongers" that make reactionary statements like you made, IMHO and it is just an opinion formed off of your comment and not about YOU, Cause I don't know YOU..need an enema...sorry, but I am over the "security moms" running the country, I remember 9/11, I remember the USS Cole, I remember trade towers of 1993, and the Embassy in Yemen..I still say you cannot be afraid and live...Just an opinion, just like that star on the comment was....no offense to YOU...just the post.

PS you kinda sound like a Cop...just an observation.

Liquorwhere, I appreciate the fact that you claimed credit for the rating.

I was in the Marine Corps for over 10 years, and I take public safety pretty personally. The way I see it is, if I didn't care, then who would? I wouldn't consider myself a safety monger, but I do believe that people should be held accountable for doing stupid things at the expense of others.

In the summer, we had a couple of teens think it was funny to take a shit in our town's water supply. While that may seem funny on the surface to those that were uneffected, this was no laughing matter. We didn't know the extent of the tampering of the town's water supply, and they had to drain and sanitize it over a 3 day period. They caught the kids after a couple of days, and I'm sure they only got a slap on the wrist. What they should have been charged with is Domistic Terrorism. The lack of swift and harsh punishment is why prople don't think twice about doing stupid crap like this.

Eric look man, I know there are people that are WAY into punishment as a deterent...but it's not man...look at our correctional facilities..millions man..complete loss of freedom and rights..still they kill, steal, cheat and commit crimes..sometimes you just gotta look at the world and say..is it really a crime? is that a terrorist? Look bro..I am not one to wanna sneak Acid into my teachers coffee or key someone's car or other stupid shit...but this was just a marketing campaign that was blown WAY out of proportion by an over reactive police force..$750,000.00 for a bunch of people to act like petty little children, to be "offended" to feel betrayed or somehow less safe...the real joke is the people that will have their taxes spent in such a flagrantly ridiculous way, even with Turner's reimbursement, it is just stupidity Eric..blantant STUPIDITY..think about the FIRST GUY on the bomb squad that looked at that thing and said to himself.."my adrenaline is wasted on a lite brite? are you f**cking kidding me?who is the scared old lady that called 911 and got me out here for a lite brite..better yet, who is the spineless beat cop that wouldn't come close enough to see it was a lite brite" So anyway, I don't think people should always think twice...I think we should take risks, live a little, unless you don't want to take risks then fine..it's a free country(we're still free right?..yeah, yeah we are).

I am all for taking risks (skateboarded for 5 years, raced XC mtb for 2 years, rode semi pro freestyle BMX for 6 years, now into motorcycling), but my risk taking did not involve others.

Why do you have such a problem with law enforcement? I find this odd coming from someone with a military background.

PS. I wish Milo was still young enough to sing and make the Descendents sound real.

come on now it was a Lite Brite....the fact that someone was stupid and no one stood back and said "wait a minute there is nothing about this that even remotely looks like a bomb" borders on criminal...how many of these things were blown up? Regardless of the fact that this whole thing seems to have to have blown over after all the things said by Boston Officials I still want to know if anyone in Boston is gonna get fired for making Boston the laughing stock of America.

Interesting. Tell me, what does a bomb look like?

A Palestinian master bomb maker was killed by Isreali security forces with a bomb hidden in a cell phone. I would think that he would be able to identify a bomb if he saw one.

If Boston becomes the laughing stock of America for taking a security threat seriously, then America is ripe for another massive attack.

have you looked at the signs??? a sheet of plastic (flat plastic) with LED's (not IED's)a light sensor and and 4 Duracell batteries. The bomb that the Palestinian bomb maker was killed with a shaped charged that wouldn't have removed a hand much less a bridge support. As for what it looks like well when you detonate a bomb with another charge you usually get a bigger boom then what use. you know 1+1=2 well in Boston is was 1+0=1. All I'm saying is that somewhere between the first one being blown up in the morning and the rest in the afternoon someone should have realized that whatever they were they weren't a threat and stood down the panic attack. Instead it seems that whoever was responsible couldn't accept that a mistake was made and the rest of the officials backed up that person because in their minds it's worse to admit to a mistake.
America is ripe for another massive attack because someone is going to exploit the lack of common sense we show. Boston isn't going to become a laughing stock they already are; their city was shut down by an over reaction to a sign that 9 other cities ignored and they still believe (publicly at least) that they were they were right. Sadly overreaction is the norm in the USA.

Exactly. I have no problem with the course of action Boston took, until the bomb squad got their hands on the first one. At that point, they should have realized its not a bomb, and immediately informed the public to RELAX.

The Cheif of Cartoon Network resigned over this!! Can you believe this crap?!?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070210/ap_on_re_us/su spicious_devices_19

I think that SUCKS. I am, I guess, one of the few who recognized the mooninites, but still. To think that a lite brite could effectively shut down a town for an entire day - real terrorists must be laughing their asses off, thinking, what a waste of resource WE used, real bombs and what-not. We could have used LITE BRITES AND BATTERIES!!

In all seriousness, this does kinda demonstrate a bunch of good-intentions to protect the public with absolutely no actual thinking involved. Good intentions are good and all, but execution is key.

This was a poorly executed plan to protect Boston from mooninites. Is it true that Turner called to claim responsibility and they STILL didn't believe them?

Woo.
