I'm totally fine with Buell making dirt bikes, but when can we expect the freakin' SuperBike we've been screaming about for years? I'm still hoping we see something in July.

This thread means nothing without PICTURES!!!!

But seriously....I might just put off purchasing my KLR. I've been wanting a dual purpose bike that is smaller than the Uly. Now I'll have to wait & see: )

I was looking at dirt bikes at the IMS and I can't see paying $6000.00 for a dirt bike. (That was a cheap one) With a much lower price point, I would think about getting back into the mud. Plus just think about all the new riding gear they could sale... bike stands.... I would need that new Buell gas can.... and that new Buell tent... Riffle holster... Water jug.... Poncho, I must have a Poncho!!

This is great news for Buell, but I am a roadracer at heart and want to see more development of their sportbikes. I hope they aren't putting all their resources to the dirt.

Hope Buell is ready for an off road public that will show no mercy if it turns out to be another Cannondale.

More fun (and reliable) than my KX 250? Hmmmm.

Why would someone with no interest in Street Bikes be in this forum? Until this announcement, Buell only MADE street bikes!

engine theory number 1;
they buy the ex-cannondale (ATK) motor and frame and further refine them.

^^ The term "competition off-road motorcycles" was used in other discussion about this, and frankly it doesn't really narrow much down. I mean, the professionally race everything from 125cc 2-strokes to the 1200cc twins that BMW runs. MotoX, SuperX, SuperMoto, Enduro, Trials, the list goes on. This should be good though.

I'm on board for if they ever build a 4-wheeling - man... Can you imagine a 4-wheeler with a 103hp XB engine in it?!

Erik mentioned this last year at our Buell event. We thought he was kidding when he said he was tired of riding his Yamaha in the dirt.

what will be interesting to me is where they sell them and who will service them. Buell is already a world apart from the Harley's they have to sleep with, IMO... now throw in a true dirty bike?

hmmm, how will the dealer network support that?? stand-alone Buell shops? please make it so!!! ;)

As far as the engine, an all-new single cylinder for a new dirt bike might be an excellent first step to an all-new V-twin for their street bikes. After all, that's basically what they did with the Blast followed by the XB9R. You design both engines at the same time. Build the single and prove most of the components in service. After a year or two of production, you come out with the V-twin version. Hmm......

Hugh - I was thinking the same thing.

The Dirtbike will obviously have an all new engine. It only makes sense to make it modular and design a whole new "family" of engines with the implications being that the street bikes will have new engines too.

I keep thinking about the Motor that KTM came out with for their street bikes... Lighter, smaller, more compact.... The options are incredible when you're starting from scratch - as they obviously will be for a new dirt bike.

This announcement will be a shot in the arm for our annual "buell is going water-cooled in July" rumors.

Get ready to be caught up endless rumor threads.

If it any thing close to this v-twin powered dirt bike/SuperMoto, I will buy one.

how about a Buell "Mule" or "Rhino" type utility four wheeler...i have a kawi mule right now and it has a 620 v twin engine in it.

Call it the Buell "Bison" (an iconic American beast)

i guess the interest for a domestic off/road bike might be significant. But it sure is a competitive market. Especially with the Chinese imports coming in at like 40% of the price of Japanese products. ya i know, the quality of those is at about 40% also...but still..

Doesn't that aprilla have a rotax motor in it?

Maybe buell will source all its engines from Rotax?

Sean (Rocket),

"as Blake is running me off the board for these very same criticisms of mine that I see as working."

Baloney! As explained, it is not your opinions but your personal attacks and other such hateful comments that led me to request that you please honor our terms of use policies here. You know, just like everyone else here.

Here's a little tip Blake, your board is working great, you got information, a good community etc. If you don't respond to the trollers, it would be that much better.

Excellent news.

I for one am prob a little old to ever get serious in the dirt again, but am excited none the less. Even BMW has come out with 3 variations of 650 'dirt' bikes. When I saw those, all I could think was 'Why hasn't Buell done that?'.

A super Blast (Blastard) or even Rotax or Can-Am powered single..I'll buy one!!! (if it's street legal)

I won't hold my breath for Buell to go dirt racing, and don't really care.

Maybe it's time for Buell to use someone else's engines. There is such a stigma with 'other-brand' riders against 'the lump' anyway.

Personally I am all for the air-cooled 'lump', but the Harley connection is not the MAIN reason why I buy Buell. I support Buell because of Erik's philosophy and because they are American made. The HD lump is only the third or fourth reason.

It might also hasten my dream of moving Buell out of HD dealerships, if the powerplant connection is severed...

WooHoo! better days are ahead. I don't even feel so bad about the XBRR demise any more!

I'd like to see another street bike

Dana, I have a very strong suspicion (based on a conversation between me, my wife and a Lecturer) that something interesting is coming. Nothing was said, but there was an implication that even I could pick up on.

I heard Erik tell Flick that we better do something to keep Rocket happy

halleluah!!!

'dirt bike'covers a lot - but given the current market trend a 500-650cc dual sport / adventure 'mini-uly' would seem a ) doable b) good marketing strategy, c) a logical step.

are they taking rider input?
- stay 'adventure'and street legal
- BIG tank: 18-20l for a 600cc would be great
- spoked wheels in common dualsport sizes
- 8" wheel travel, minimum, front and rear
- hate to say it, but for the off-road bracket, either get REAL creative with the muffler, or its got to go undertail. (against the mass centralization philosophy, I know, but the whole concept of a dual sport argues for clearance: clearance+balance = muffler somewhere else!)

$0.02 - but hey, I'm already taking my CityX into some pretty gnarly places. Hey erik - need a beta tester ?
