The path to financial freedom. Live like a POW with your parents until you're 30. Save, save, save - invest and retire a multi-millionaire. Staying single or staying married helps - divorce does not. Live in an area with high pay which usually means a high cost of living but when you retire and sell your house it will fetch more. Retire to an area with a low cost of living.

I'm a Dad to 3 boys, 11, 15, and 18, and I'm a husband for a little over 15 years now.
I work for a group of attorneys, and all their staff, at the worlds largest soft drink company. I keep their technology needs met. I guess you could say I'm a consultant.
I drive the TDT (thousand dollar truck) that does just fine for poor weather transport, and hauling the XB. We live northeast of Atlanta, half way between work (uptown Atlanta) and the Great North Georgia Mountains.
Also I work here at BadWeB, a most rewarding job, but the pay *sucks*. ;)

I work as a parts guy at an H-D/Buell dealership. My only car is my first, a '79 Camaro that has sat in my mother's garage for years (sorry mom), and my '96 S1 that has been my daily driver for over 5 years. The most money has gone to a dozen custom guns I've built (people often ask why that is not my occupation). I don't believe in turning enjoyable hobbies into work.

We were most prosperous when my wife was welding. Alas, I ruined it by knocking her up and turning her into a stay at home mother.

Retired from a major oil company.

Work many different positions, started as an ordinary seaman on oil tankers, got lucky and moved into an environmental and safety position, then the to operations group.

Wound up working for the pipe line company in the operations group.

All that took about 26 years

I don't believe in turning enjoyable hobbies into work.

Well, that kind of happened to me when we bought the house (sold the Sportster for cash) but I discovered I enjoy teaching. Plus, I love the hell out of all my jobs, which is something few people say. You know, when the books are published and start selling and I win the lottery and the kids graduate from expensive private schools with no loan balance and I still have way too much money, I'll throw a big Buell party here in the Blue Ridge and all y'all are invited.

You can find me pretty easy: I'll still be riding the bone-stock Blast! It's too much fun.}

I wear a bunch of hats these days...

Tool & die designer.
IT/IS manager.
Machinist.

The coolest thing I do now, is making a few custom parts for friends and a few Buell racers lately!

Besides Homecoming, I've not attended any of the other Buell events. When my 5 year old is old enough to start riding with us(besides the around the block rides), the wife, Thomas, and myself will be doing more of those events. I've got over 4 weeks of vacation a year. Might as well use 'em : )

Thanks for the responses.....It seems a lot of us are in the same boat. I see a lot of guys responding who don't post much. It is really nice hearing from guys in the same general situation.

I have two car and a twenty year old pickup that are paid for, no credit card debt and we both work. Of course my bike. The house will be paid for in three years. We take one vacation a year (off season) to the outer banks or Myrtle Beach.

Just looking and reading all the stories I am amazed at what other people are able to do and own.

I agree with the credit card are a necessary evil....Just make sure you pay them off every month.

Court........I have been doing the same or similar jobs for the last 18 years. So I used to love it but "the thrill is gone".

Al:

I'll add that you possess the "wealth" of having "married well".

Besides making great pies, you wife is one of the 4 coolest people in the world.

Riches are funny things . . . sometimes looking in your wallet is the wrong place to find them.

Few things better than a great pecan pie.

Still doing the controls gig for a good friend that builds autoclave and pressure vessle systems, I make 2/3 of what I used to, live in a beach town have 2 bills to go then I am Outa Debit, got enough to keep me and the sled up, and friends that help with garage space

My .02$ is,
Whats in the wallet or garage does not matter.
It's whats in your heart and who loves you That is what makes you rich...

(off season) to the outer banks

Funny, we usually head to Ohio to visit family in Cincinnati. Next time you're headed to the OBX, pop on C3 and let us know.

I quit work 3 years ago when I had our 3rd child. Gave up pretty decent money for the area and was afraid of how we would make ends meet. So far we're making it. We have a 96 Caravan, 94 Suburban and 99 M2 that are paid for. The only liens are on the house and the Uly.

Can't worry about what the Jones' are doing. As long as my children are happy and healthy, the rest will come in time. Have been broke for less reasons!
As for Buell events, we do local stuff with and will probably make March Badness one of our annual events. Occasional trips without your children are good the the marriage! They don't have to cost a lot to make it memorable.

Uly I will let you guys know if I pass thru the area.

Last year we were in Atlantic beach NC. Friend has a condo and we were there the first week in june. Stopped at Wilburs in Goldsboro for some Q. And in Kinston at Kings BBQ on the way home. Looks like you guys are not very far from kinston. Plans are still up in the air for this summer......

I really want to go to homecoming and my son and daughter have both voted for beach time. Whats a dad to do????? Looks like beach time hopefully I can talk momma into letting daddy have a pass and go to homecoming.

I have a friend at work that has a condo at Hilton Head I can get......I don't golf and other than the beach there does not look like much else to do. I am kinda waiting to see if the other people have their condos available.

My kids have mentioned Disney Now that is a money pit. They are only little once.

Another thing to keep in mind -

I see this all the time in bike ads - "must sell - moving", (or " - getting married" or " - wife says it's gotta go" or whatever)

If you are the real deal (if you are, you'll know what I sayin' here) as far as motorcycle enthusiasts go, and not just someone that got the bike 'cause it was cool or what the other guys were doing, etc. - KEEP THE BIKE!

You may be in hock up to your ears, creditors and upset family menbers at the door, or wondering if you've got enough peanut butter for 2 more weeks, whatever:
if you let go of that bike - you will regret it, big time.

In the 36 years that I've been a bike owner, the cumulative 10 weeks or so in all that time of not being "with bike" were times of strangeness and difficulty that is hard to describe.

If your spouse says "NO BIKE" you've simply chosen the wrong partner, not pastime. (communication, rather than divorce, is the best cure for that!)

"RICH" for us (the enthusiasts) is having a bike to ride (or work on if that 's your thing) and friends & family that are like-minded!

This is just my opinion, of course - I may be mistaken!

Captnemo,

Worked for Stolt, now CDI after they bought us. I've been working offshore for over 6 years, and love it.

Yes, my beat-up dive hat is now worth more than what I paid for my 2005 KLR 650, brand new.

Yes, Al, a thousand times yes. Sold the Sporty and was pulled over twice on stalking charges because I thought the guy ahead of me might be riding my old one. When the Wing died I went exactly 14 months without a bike. Couldn't afford a new one and couldn't find a used one for $2,000 that wasn't beaten, battered and bruised. When I stumbled across the Blast I blew the last of my savings (the hell with Christmas. Let them buy their own presents). Since then Virginia has had one of the warmest winters on record -- just in time for my riding -- a magazine wants me to free lance and a publisher wants to look at the book. When you're happy and you know it, good things happen.

It seems a large number of people on this forum travel a ton, make all the buell events

I rode to Daytona last year with a few people from this board. Our tent space cost us $23 apiece. I had earplugs so the snorning didn't bother me : ) Funny thing is I had more fun than I would have if I'd have stayed in a hotel.

I'm a regional coordinator for a government organization. I'm sure as heck not rich right now, but it's a comfortable, sure thing income while I'm finishing the last year of my MBA.

I'm able to spend lavishly on my Buell obsession and still invest some of my income by being super-frugal with everything else. I'd rather walk to work, eat a sandwich instead of sushi every night, and just wear an extra sweater while watching TV on my 22" CRT than turn up the heat and pay big utility bills.

Plus, I'm single and have no children. However, I met a wonderful woman through this very forum that is as crazy about Buells as I am. Our first date is tomorrow, so wish us luck. Neither of us want nor have kids and both us of have multiple degrees, so we may have a shot at becomming DIMB's too. (-: Wish us luck. (Now if I can just get her to stop buying $900 pairs of shoes...)

42, no wife no kids. I freelance in the publishing industry, but I'm thinking of giving that up all together now too. I just finished a 1 1/2 project in Dec that completely kicked my ass. I think I've hit the wall.

I have a 99 X1 race-stripe, a 64 honda 305 dream, a 04 scion xb and a an 85 911. I think I'm gonna trade the scion for a truck though.

I just got rid of a 77 kz1000a, 78 kz1000 police special and an 83 xj900, all at once to some guy that's gonna' send them to Denmark, don't ask me why, but he sure gave me long green on all that jap iron.

i own a small (very small) construction business. about 80% seamless gutters and the rest roofing, siding, kitchen/bath, etc. downside is you don't make much, upside is i get to read my kid a story every night! i haven't missed a family "event" in over 3 years.

did ten years in the corporate cubicle world as a broker then regional sales manager. tough to watch a once proud american manufacturing company go from 600 people to 75. offshore competition is tough(their loaded labor rate was roughly 1/10 of ours). this probably led to my fascination with buell.

i consider the construction business to be somewhat of an extended vacation compared to the "trench warfare" that was the corporate world. will probably have to go back to corporate at some time though.

I am a SITCAW w/TDATC. Single Income Three Kids And Wife with Two Dogs and Two Cats. I have been with the same company for ten years now. It is a manufacturer a little bigger than Buell. Even though my income has more than tripled in the last ten years, Ulywife for most of those ten years made more than I did as an Executive Director of a non-profit. Three years ago we decided to have the tradition family, which was a real shock to her parents because she was never the Suzy Home Maker type. When we met as teenagers she had a job, and has always had a job until our third child was born. At the time she quit working we were making within a few thousand dollars of each other and it was quite a shock cutting our household income in half. Though she would have never thought back in high school that she would be a house wife with three kids, I've never seen her happier. The cooperate stuff stresses anyone out, and life with her at home was always a dream of mine, if not hers. She keeps busy with the three kids plus uses her strong administrative skills to organize PTA, Badweb events for and RAN. Like Glitch said, she loves the work, but the pay sucks!

As for marrying well, Ulywife and I have been together since XR1000s and V65s ruled the streets and a young engineer with a dream started to act on it. She put down the deposit on my first street bike, well second if you count my Motobecane model 7 (hey it had under-slung exhaust). I was prepared to walk away telling myself it was too much for a toy. She told me, "I put the deposit down, so either go get the bike or loose the deposit." Impressive to say the least. That was my Father's day present that year. The next year I bought the M2 on Mother's day, but the bike was not for her. She is a self-proclaimed pillion so now I had the two bikes. Last year after looking the Uly over hard again she gave me the nudge and I took home the first Uly in eastern North Carolina. Later sold the Honda and now am a proud owner of two Buells.

I have made many events in the past almost four years. Each event was an adventure but always on a budget. Like Jlnance said, we camped and passed on a $200 per night room. We did have a great time and adventure but for some reason the snoring did not bother me. Central in Suches is one of the largest and most expensive cabins in the area, but with Fourteen of your closest friends sharing the cost it breaks down to under $70 each for the weekend. I (make that Ulywife) bought a two man tent that will pack nicely in the Uly bags and that is accommodation for many events.

I put 24,000 miles on my Honda, 18,000 miles on my M2 and almost that much on my Uly. A lot of tires, a lot of gas stops, a lot of gear and I would not trade the experience for anything.
