ok, so Ive taken an interest in learning how to write faster via some type of shorthand. Ive browsed the net, and learned that there are different styles to shorthand. Does anyone use a particular style or recommend a good way to learn about shorthand?

Gregg is the older style of shorthand. What has been taught for the past 25 years or so is Century (if memory serves me). Shorthand is based upon symbols for sounds, therefore, eliminating letters like in longhand. They also have some symbols for words regardless of the letters.

Your best bet would probably be to lay your hands on an old high school textbook. I may actually have an old book if you don't have any luck finding one via e-bay or a school supply house. I don't even think they teach shorthand in school anymore.

I think there is also something called speed writing - don't know much about it as I took shorthand.

Hi Ulywife, I invented my own shorthand in college and have been using in journalism for 30 years. First, cut out all vowells s tht wht u wrt lks lk ths. Then shorten it with a few symbols such as @, <,>, and other things that you know. The main thing is to practice it until it's second nature.

Or, you could take a class.}

When I took shorthand I was in high school. I didn't want to take it, but at my Mother's insistence, I did. Ended up taking it for 2 1/2 years! When I changed schools, they were Century students, I was Gregg. Luckily enough my teacher knew both. It was fun for me to try and figure out the Century words on the board!

Like Rainman said - the main thing is practice until it becomes second nature what ever type of "shorthand" you choose.

Good luck to you!
