I've participated in a thread or two this week expressing my disdain at Buells politics regarding exposure of forthcoming models.

I'm putting this thread up in the interest of fairness to those that would NOT wish to see anything Buell has in the pipeline for 2007. So take this as a warning!

Sometime later today I'm going to place pic's on the BadWeB, in this thread, of a pre production Streetfighter motorcycle which Buell will launch in July for general sale. If you don't want to see these pic's then please don't come back to this thread.

These pic's were promised me before Christmas but there was a delay caused by the festive holiday. They are the real deal. No I can't reveal my source either as I believe they were obtained illegally. I can tell you the flight delays caused by the blanket fog in the UK meant my source couldn't get the flight they wanted from the US to Heathrow. I'm not aware of any Buell insider having been sacked from the company. I'm told no one who should know even knows they exist. Trust me, not even Jack Bauer could have got these in a week, never mind 24 hours!

Later peeps.

Just a note of warning/explanation to anyone who may stumble upon this without knowing Rocket and who might actually think that they will see something interesting on this thread:

This is what Rocket considers a "joke". He doesn't have any connections or inside information. In fact, based on his comments, I'd be a little surprised if he has ever even visited the Buell factory.

He does know a thing or two about motorcycles. Unfortunately knowing a thing or two is a far cry from truly understanding all the elements required to finance, design, market, build and sell a motorcycle.

I believe the purpose of this thread is to emphasize that Rocket prefers the Ducati method:

Ducati (Nov. 2005): Here's our cool new "Hypermotard":

Public: Great! We love it! How much?

Ducati: Well, we don't know yet. In fact, we don't know if we'll actually sell it. We may make something that has "design elements" from this, but isn't actually as cool, or we may sell it in other countries, but not yours, or we may scrap it altogether.

Public: Oh. . . well . . . I guess get back to us when you've actually got something.

Rocket seems to think that's preferable to Buell's method of developing a product, working all the bugs out, performing crash testing and endurance testing and EPA noise and pollution testing, refining designs until they are truly production ready and waiting to unveil the bike until it's on trucks on its way to dealers.

Personally I prefer Buell's method, but Rocket is welcome to his opinion.

I like knowing what bikes are being developed. I'm more likely to wait for and ultimately buy a bike that I'm aware is being considered for production, otherwise I just buy what interests me at the moment.

Elvis, thanks for the resounding compliments. I had no idea you knew me so well. Oh wait a minute. You're not the real Elvis?

If you'd have visited the Milan show last month, like Erik Buell did, Aprilia had on their stand something much more interesting than an XBTT. The reason I mention this is because Aprilia are in similar ways like Buell. They are owned by Piaggio which is a very large and wealthy company just like HD is.

So what was on Aprilias stand you ask? A new engine is the answer. One that Aprilia designed in house. It's a liquid cooled double overhead cam V four, but one that incorporates some clever design to enable it to remain short in length so it sits well, in fact pretty close to what their existing V twin does in the RSV chassis. Aprilia have also made this engine narrow by chain driving one set of cams and gear driving the opposite set. Magnetti Marelli have already got the f.i and fly by wire throttles prototyped and the engine has already been tested and ridden in an RSV chassis.

Buell meanwhile remain tight lipped, except to let us know the City X has finally served its purpose and used up all those unsellable XB9R engines that were cluttering up the shelves in East Troy. Boring!

Ok. This now tops my list of dumbest threads on the Badweb. It's amazing how much inside info people have. Mean while I have friends that are engineers at Buell, and I have no idea what's next for a bike. Or do I?
Either way, I wouldn't post it here.
July is only 6 short months away.
Now, get on with your lives

The consternation amongst two of the Buell cognoscenti here is disgraceful.

There are two considerations here. Am I joking, which is known as having fun, or am I serious, which is hot news worthy of any Buell fans reading.

To the two who have to throw insults and pissed on my bonfire because they're jealous they haven't got the scoop or are to miserable to get the joke - up yours you miserable bastards.

To all else, not long now. Just waiting for a phone call from a legal eagle friend of mine.

Rocket

Sean, the problem I have with this thread--and I am sure others feel as I do, is you shot your mouth first and there is nothing to see. Perhaps if you had posted said pics your boasting would not have gotten under so many skins. If you have news, post it, stop talking it to death and throwing insults as you go.
Do, then tell.

Elvis,

Just how is the Ducati method any different than the Mothership with the new XR1200? They might build it, and then it MIGHT be for Europe only.....

It is called test marketing, and bike and car companies do it all the time. You build a "Show Bike/Car" to gauge the reaction, and if it is positive the project gets a green light. Harley does it. Ducati does it. BFD

I hope Harley does build the XR1200, and I hope they sell it in the US, but I suspect that it will eat into Buell sales.}

PS Does Buell really "crash test" their bikes?

Garp,

No real difference. You're right. Most companies test market their bikes, and most car companies test market their cars.

Have you seen the new Camaro? Pretty cool, huh? I'm afraid that by the time I can actually buy one the design will seem dated.

I would have much rather seen GM pull the cover off the Camaro when it was ready to go so I could go to my Chevy dealer and buy on when it was still fresh, but they didn't want to take the chance.

I don't begrudge any motorcycle or car company the safe route of test marketing a design before going through the EXTREMELY expensive task of setting up production lines and building a new vehicle, but I see that as the norm, not the ideal.

And yes, while I should make it clear that I don't work for Buell, I was told by an engineer that they crash test their bikes. I was also told - and this one will break your heart - that they make a number of prototypes and those bikes have to be destroyed. They can't sell them because of liability concerns.

I even told him I'd sign a waiver.

Could this be it?
