what are you going to be doing with said graphics card (besides the 2 monitors). Heavy 3D? or Just 2D. I've been partial to nvidia cards lately (since they have FreeBSD drivers), If your aren't looking to play tons of games on them, a couple revs behind latest and greatest are still plenty fast enough. Places like newegg are your friend when you go to buy.

Spides,

I like ATI's chipset. Currently have a X1300 at the 512mb count. Running two 19" LCDs and having some fun.

I run Dell 20.1 and a 19 side by side at work on a Geforce 7950GT.

If you're going to do any cad work, stick with Nvidia.

AGP or PCI-Express slot?

I set up a Quad G5 mac to run eight 30 inch monitors!

We used Nvidia's Quatro FX 4500 w/ 512MB.

Computer $3200
4 cards $1750 x 4 = 7k
8 30 inch displays $2000 x 8 = 16k

The system with taxes and setup cost just under 30k.

Not the cheapest option, but a show of horsepower!!!!

The system was for "home use"

When using dual+ displays try to stick with LCD's I have broken a table with 3 x 20 inch CRT's before : (

If you want to run 3D apps across all screens, check out Matrox

My 256MB Matrox Parhelia has been running strong for 6 years and counting, under constant use.

ATI drivers have been a consistent thorn in my side whenever I had the cards in one of my systems. I have had better luck with the NVidia.

For 2d cad, I might be able to scare up an older NVidea Quadro for you pretty cheap. Its a smoking hot 2d card, almost useless for 3d (first person gaming). Will support dual monitors with a single card, which I think is the safest way to do it.

+1 on ATI drivers being a sticky wicket. People who author malignant code such as viruses and trojans could (and probably do) learn a lot from them. Very invasive and troublesome to uninstall. And don't try to upgrade your windows version with ATI installed, unless you've got a lot of extra time on your hands.

Nvidia has been very good to me on the gaming front, as has Matrox. For CAD functions, both 2D and 3D, the Matrox is specifically designed for it so definitely worth a look.

Solid, reliable products, both.

I have a ATI radeon xt850 and run two 23 inch lcd's no problem. Far as virus's and such go no problems yet. I don't really find the drivers or control panel that invasive.

I was an Nvidia man till I ran into trouble with a couple of cards with bad ram. They replaced them under warranty but they where gone for a couple of weeks.

Pwnzor, the problem with Matrox... The bang for the buck just isn't there.

Spidey, the best bang for buck AGP card will be based on the Nvidia 7600GS(around $120), or 7600GT cards(Around $175).

The bang for the buck just isn't there.

I disagree. It runs brilliant 3D across all displays, treats the entire array as if it were one. You don't get that with other cards.

So value is in the application. To each his own.

How big are your displays?

I currently run a 30in dell, and a 24in dell lcd off a Ati card.

Very few agp cards have dual link DVI (needed to push the 30in resolution).

If you are running something smaller (<20in) than almost any modern card will work just peachy.

Nvidia makes great cards, but they have power requirements that can tax a system. Make sure your power supply can handle a new card.
