Getting rid of religion wouldn't help a damn thing... we'd just find another reason to hate each other.

Everyone is equal already... some are just more equal than others.

Mortar - what Rocket said

Johnny - it ain't communism, socialism, fascism or anything like that - never look to politics for a solution

Bird - Sharia law is like a rattlesnake - leave it alone and it won't bite you

DJ - never said everyone will be equal - don't even know what that means

"Bird - Sharia law is like a rattlesnake - leave it alone and it won't bite you "

I'd be , but I think you actually believe that.

Under Sharia law, all property can be seized. Muhammed is reported to have done that repeatedly. They still practice that today. It is actually very oppressive. Salman Rushdie criticized Iran and under Sharia law they have issued an order to kill him. Believe "leave it alone and it won't bite you" if you want, just be prepared to become Islamic or die. Oh you don't drink do you? Public caning is the prescribed punishment.

As a catholic I was told if I didn't attend church on Sunday I would spend eternity burning in hell. Life is short. Eternity is a forever. How oppressive is that? You're not Islamic( or are you?). Don't worry about it. That's my point.

As a Catholic, I was taught that God is forgiving and merciful. I was also taught that His greatest commandment is to love Him and to love our neighbors. I have never found love to be oppressive.

I don't see paranoia in this thread. I don't see hatred or bigotry. I see some choosing not to see reality that those who practice Sharia law are intolerant and ready to kill anybody who doesn't submit to their will.

Merry Christmas! Peace on earth! Good will to men!

I do.

I was also taught that His greatest commandment is to love Him and to love our neighbors.

Would that include your Sharia neighbours, or does your god exempt them from his love?

I see bigotry, and I also see a nation stirred by gutter press journalism. I haven't studied Sharia law enough to comment so unequivically upon its preachings and I'd bet my bottom dollar the press and anyone here on the BadWeB hasn't either.

What I do know is this. If Sharia law was the vile oppressive law it is claimed, I doubt the scholars of such religion would be preaching under their laws today. I'd suggest in depth and unbiased study of such laws before I went proclaiming I know better for my people, but more so their people.

If any of the politically correct limp wristed socialist crowd were made to live under sharia law they would see the real meaning of hate, bigotry and slavery. The same crowd that never has anything good to say about America or its rule of law or its leaders. The ones who nitpick at every decision whether it ends in a good outcome or bad outcome have nothing but hate and criticism.

You guys should start a peace pilgrimage to places like syria or iran to spread your message of love and a world without religion or moral law. Im sure you'll be met with open arms since the media is in fact painting alot of these people as extremists and thats probablly just a scheme by Bush/Cheney to go after their oil. Show them that were are all equal: men, women, heterosexual or homosexual and even transexual. Im sure if it offends them they will only turn away rather than stone you to death or cut off one of your limbs.

Oh, heres another muslim website that had some interesting things to say about sharia law:

Can Sharia (Islamic Law) work in the 21st Century?
Sharia law is no longer an obscure niche in the study of Islam. Today Sharia, its role in political Islam and its impact on the daily lives of Muslim women and humanity has made headlines everywhere, almost daily. For example:
** in Canada amid lots of social controversy and resistance, a Sharia court has formally started working on domestic and business issues with the blessing of Canadian law.
** in Nigeria and Pakistan unmarried girls and widows or divorced women who gets pregnant even by rape, are flogged or sentenced to death by stoning.
** in Malaysia by court order, a woman got instantly divorced by her husband by message left in answering machine.
** in Afghanistan women are banned by law from performing on radio or TV even for news broadcasting.
** in Pakistan hundreds of women are jailed under adultery and blasphemy laws.
** in Bangladesh, women are forced into strangers' beds by Sharia law while raped minor girls are flogged under Zina (adultery) law.
** in Iran, Pakistan, Sudan and Malaysia etc, women are fighting against oppressive Sharia laws which limit their lives in countless ways. .

I know I know what your thinking, "man Bush and Cheney have even gone as low as making a fake muslim website to spread their hate of Islam!"

Its crazy I know but with all that money theyre raking in from Iraqi oil its no surprise that have the resources for fake websites.

Nice research Johnny, unfortunately I think you are casting pearls before swine, some will never get it.

In my experience, when someone resorts to calling you a bigot it's because they realize they can no longer defend their own argument with reason. Instead of debating the issue, they attack the character of the other person. It's an easy tactic when your position is weak and it's very difficult for the other person to defend against.

One last thing before I go. I feel I can expose my true identity to the patriots on this thread. I'm really working undercover, looking for commies, terrorists, litterbugs and the like. I mean what better place than on a site devoted to sportbikes with a Harley motor. How un-American is that! Sort of like a muslim with a Yankee hat on. Imagine that.

"You're a good old bird! ;)"

Cool! Another fan of A Christmas Carol! Merry Christmas!

"Would that include your Sharia neighbours, or does your god exempt them from his love? "

It does extend to them. I also believe love one another means protect the innocent from harm. I look at my wife and children and am immensely thankful for our guys in uniform who protect all of us. I also pray that I never have to harm another to protect my or somebody else's family from harm. but if necessary, I will and then beg God's forgiveness if I acted wrongly.

"I haven't studied Sharia law enough to comment so unequivically upon its preachings and I'd bet my bottom dollar the press and anyone here on the BadWeB hasn't either. "

Google Sharia law. It is amazing what comes up. Also the press has reported on it although they do less now after 9/11 then they did before.

Once again. Merry Christmas to all!

May we all have new Buells tomorrow morning. (I know it won't happen, but it is a nice thought! The only downside is it would work DaveS awfully hard today.)

Religious law Bad. Period.
Pick your least favorite TV preacher. The one with views you don't like. Imagine he has the power of a Roman Emperor, like Caligula.

What country to you run to, to get away from that level of evil? England? Australia? the U.S.A.? When religious law makes England unsafe for rude jerks like me, ( now? soon? never? ) how will mild, uncritical folk like Sean do? Separate law for separate people? We went through that here, in the last century. Bad. Separate people means the other is less than human, with less than human rights. I've seen it. If skin color, or religion are the dividing lines, how far behind is the mass murder of the Gulag? Aushwitz? Ruwanda?

Note I don't want Billy Graham to rule me, or issue a Fatwa to call for my death either. Doesn't Rushdie live in the U.K.?
Have you never objected to some official stupidity? Some car thing? Do you want Blair to be able to call for your murder by anyone in the street, because you don't like a decision?

True. Very good points Patrick.

Sean, no it doesn't happen THAT often. If I remember correctly you are the only person that has done so. Maybe we have a different definition for bigot. In my mind there are few insults worse then that of bigot. Just the word brings to mind Adolph Hitler, Archie Bunker, Spike Lee, etc... Truly hateful people. Is that the opinion you have of me? I challenge you to find ANYTHING I've posted that is hateful.

Like I said, maybe we approach the word from different directions. I generally try to post/respond based on reason. Maybe not reasoning you agree with - but you have never seen me personally insult or label anyone on this site. When you have to resort to name calling, you've pretty much indicated you have nothing else intelligent to say.

Happens often eh. I wonder why. Because they realize they can no longer defend their own argument with reason. Instead of debating the issue, they attack the character of the other person. It's an easy tactic when your position is weak.

The point was not about you or anyone else being a bigot. It is about how what you or anyone else says that has some basis in bigotry.

It is very hard to find an American that doesn't display a strong sense of patriotism. That's all well and good until it becomes too much like nationalism. Nationalism might not be such a bad thing when it's contained at home and has little or a diluted affect on the rest of the world, but when that is not the case and America, god bless her, plays the role of worlds policeman, then nationalism will be the Achilles heel of too proud a nation.

Bigotry has its roots in patriotism and nationalism. Show me a man that can truly put his patriotism aside for the betterment of his neighbour who doesn't share his culture / religion / skin colour. That is the way we will find peace and harmony so we can all coexist on the planet.

Do you really need to engross yourself in Sharia law? Then do something bold and stop the Japanese from killing Whales. Better still. Stop riding your Buell and killing the planet. Where exactly do YOU draw the line for the good of mankind and the planet? Having a conscience is a good thing I'm sure. But having too much of one just might get your fingers (and mine) burnt meddling in things that really do (should) not concern you.

The ideal in this country, for over a century, was "the melting pot". Like the Borg, we will add your cultural & biological distinctiveness to our own.

As each wave of immigrants came, they did experience bigotry, from some. The "no Irish need apply" signs were remembered by my Grandfather. Those with accents, different facial features, skin tone, all had a slightly harder time than those from England. But even a Welshman or a Chinaman could be accepted in a community if he made an effort to be American.

On a completely selfish level, I don't want to be condemned for my "sins". I want to ride, have kinky sex, and consume a beer from time to time. Those who want to rule me by "religious" regulations would forbid me beer, keep wanton woman locked up, ( Some folk in Islam, Christianity, etc ) ban my Cyclone, ( Greens ) or economically ruin me ( leftist socialists ) keeping me from affording my sins. Screw them.

"... burnt meddling in things that really do (should) not concern you."

Right on!

So telling people that if they want to force their religious laws on others, they should go live somewhere else where that is ok, is fine with me.

Patriotism does not equal bigotry. Bigotry IS used to turn one people on another. Crowds don't chant "Death to XXXX" spontaneously, some evil F%$& is leading that. They are bigots.

Some folks need to read the Koran. It contains the roots of sharia law. suspect that your wife is planning to disobey you? Send her to bed alone and beat her. It's in the Koran clear as the nose on your face along with plenty of other intolerant evil bile. I've read it. That is my opinion.

So if you do not permit the immigration of a whole culture of people based on their religion because they are suspected of beating their wives, how about shipping out all those in this country who have ever laid a hand on their wife for any reason. Spousal abuse is epidemic here. Is that so hard to see? We have to stop reading and start seeing.

No. Prison is sufficient for wife beaters who are convicted of criminal activity.

While it is indeed a serious issue and deserves our attention and concern, spousal abuse is not "epidemic here." An epidemic is something that spreads rampantly through contagion or is widely prevalent. Something is "prevalent" when it is the prevailing practice.

Reject citizenship to anyone who affirms their commitment to a cult and its laws that decree the execution of any/all who leave the cult? That sounds infinitely reasonable to me.

Referring to a religion as a "cult" is the same as regarding soldiers as "terrorists" whom, I believe, you would describe those muslims who fight against Americans worldwide. Your choice of words provides a spin on the issue and is inherently discriminatory.
As far as muslim immigration into this country. Any of those who are as you've described, would find the "American Way of Life" much too sinful to want to move here. However, I believe the overwhelming majority of the muslim population are as moderate with their religious practices as any other religious group and would assimilate well. Some of the more orthodox may very well separate themselves much like the Hasidic community. But all will add to a very young multicultural society.

Quoth the Rocketman:

You have a point. Bigotry is as natural as eating and defecating but is much more basic than patriotism and nationalism.

Tribalism is the natural state of mankind. It has been this way since people were using rocks to brain members of other tribes -- long before it escalated to longer, pointed sticks.

We all have PLENTY of reasons to hate. It is the "other tribe" that is the enemy.

My tribe is better than yours.

Witness the predictable opposiong positions taken on internet discussions - type of bike, types of beer, religions.

You're ALL going to hell... or not.
