All

I've got the MaDuece torn down prepatory to doing some motor work, frame poweder coating, and general re-grooving -- poor ol nail has seen a great many miles, not to mention grins, and I'm gonna get everything all strac (or shipshape, depending on the analogy you prefer) . . .

anywho, one of the funkier portions of the pile of parts and componants I have in the entropy lab is the wiring harness -- those expando sleeves that protect much of the wiring are great places to attract and hold spooge, oil, bug guts and about 6 pounds of North Carolina pavement bits (remember the slow but greatly enjoyable ride to nowheree while we were at the Gap, Greg and Mennis?).

hence, my question, as I'm sure I'm not the first fella to try and get the harness clean -- how do YOU clean this rats nest?

thanks!

mild soap and water hair dryer/compressed oil free air to dry the connectors,
do not use solvent based cleaners as unless the wire is rated for petrolium exposure it can adversely effect the insulation jackets.
( and may remove the color coding traces )

A close visual inspection of the control rings and connectors would be time well spent, the white plastics used for some items tend to go south in the weather

One school would prolly recomend dialectric grease on the connectors at re assm, the VR connector being a prime canidate.

One last though use UV resistant tywraps for the re assm these are usualy black

the regular white ones will bake out in the sun and become brittle.

good luck Bomber.

Spidy on 99-out of 100 I would agree with you,

here I would be concerend brake cleaners are either chloronated or light petrol / alchohol, the effect on the plastic may not be seen for a while, also the heavy cleaners like simple green may adversly effect the wire itsself again over time, I was thinking Dawn non citrus or similar,
dry out as above right after the clean up,

one great thing about the Major IRAN is that you will (as Ferris Put it ) "touch it"

Thanks for the tips, all -- I appreciate being able to access all your experience and wisdom . . . .

since I'm located in the frost-heave belt, I think I'll try the non-cholirnated brake cleaner -- while it's toast in the Entropy Lab, running a hose and rinsing stuff off in water isn't much of an option for a few months --

dielectric grease is on the bench, waiting to be deployed . . . . .

thanks again, and here's to a great New Year to all!

Bluz and Swampthing -- I've done that, thanks -- my women and I have reached a series of agreements regarding the uses of the structures on the property --

while I am granted great latitude by them (they ARE supremely patient with me), my better half is referring to me as her "present husband." I'd like to keep it that way ;-}

the harness is WAY spoogey -- not sure I WANT to clean it in the tub

Lanolin based hand cleaner will clean it up nicely, with no damage to the wires, color tracers, etc. It'll even smell good !!

Probably a good thing there are no women living in my house. I think the bathtub is good for everything from washing golf clubs and cleats to washing the dog. I also occasionally take a shower in there just to clean the grass and leaves out of the drain. I'm sure I'd probably drag my greasy old wiring harness in there too. LOL! The tub will clean up!

Could always take it in the shower with ya???

Nothing better than hot warer and dirt washes down the drain.....I would recommend you don't use any heavy abrasive cleaners in there.....
