Whenever I am fortunate enough to have free time for a good ride and I run into new faces on motorcycles I do my best to exercise proper etiquette in discussing our respective rides. I ask the usual "how do you like it?/ how does she ride questions and make sure to pose my WTF questions if I have any in a way that does not insult or challenge my new friends taste in bikes/preferences. For the most part most people respond in kind..... But in a world of 6.625 billion people I guess your going to have weather some smart asses. there was a time that these yahoos actually would get under my skin. But if there is one true reward of getting older it is patience and a sarcastic wit that can only get better with time.So with that here are some of the well though out questions and smartas.....I mean witty answers I have exchanged with my friends (some new, some old) lately.

Question to me: Why a Buell!?! why not just buy a harley.

Answer: (eying his ipod Nano) The same reason you don't didn't buy a "Zune"

Question to me: So your'e telling me that bike handles better than my Dyna???

Answer: Only if you need reassurance!

Question to an old friend: Can I take a picture of you and your daughter for the family? (In a HD/Buell dealership)

His reply: Sure but not by these buells...over here by the Harleys, you mind?

My counter reply: Not at all! thats why Adobe gave us Photoshop.

Question to me: Why not get some nice leather saddlebags instead of those... OOh wait(mocking voice) I know ..beeecuz they are not arrow-die-namic!!!

My answer: Well that works too, I usually stop at "they look %$#&ing stupid"

I have more but was hoping that some of you out there on th B.W. could chime in with your stories as they are probably funnier than mine.

Happy, Merry everything,Randy

Ducati rider to me: "Is you bike supposed to shake like that?"
(turns to buddies and they all laugh all snooty like)

Me: "Is your clutch supposed to sound like a marble in a paint can?"

(I then to my buddies and laugh like Thurston Howell III)

It's a tribal thing.

Discuss beer preferences.

Discuss preferences in women/men.

Discuss sashimi v. grilled fish.

Discuss weekends watching ballsports or motorsports (or racing v. playing pick-up games in the park)

I've gotten the "why not get a REAL bike?" in the parking lot on a weekend ride from an ignoramus on a Harley trying to impress his ladyfriend. I asked: "you mean Yamaha? Honda? Suzuki? Kawasaki? or Italian? English?"

We're always drawing divisions between ourselves along our peculiar tribal lines. Just the way it is, has been and always will be.

(scene... at a red light, two sportbikers splitting lanes at the red light)

Honda VFR (between #2 and #3 lane) "That's a lot of vibration, isn't it?"

XB12R (between #1 and #2 lane) "It's a lot of power." (light turns green and XB12R roars away, pwning VFR)

First comment to me: You should put a chain on that thing so it is rideable.

My response: So I have to clean it, lube it, adjust it and replace it regularly taking away from precious riding time?

No one has ever said anything smart-alecky to me about having a Buell, not personally. There are some internet warriors that've said stuff, but never anyone to my face. Maybe they say stuff behind my back, I don't know.

Everyone just shows interest and curiosity, never a disparaging word.

Now, I have had a few XB punks say shit about tubers...

...just kidding

Most are pretty cool about the Buell, more curiosity than insult. There have been a few though.......

Question to me: Don;t you get hot wearing all that stuff?

My answer: Well the meatloaf at Mercy's burn unit just don't cut it anymore!

I've actually come to love this part of the"lifestyle" and find if you reply with a smile the bright ones will shrug and put their feet back on the ground and reach out a friendly hand. The not so bright ones?...

Question: That's a 2007? My dealer said Buell went out of business.

Answer: Yeah....out of his business!

heh heh, They're practice.

One of my favorites to say........

harley guy: Why don't you get a real bike?

Me: How do you keep a jackass in suspense?

harley guy: I don't know, how?

at that point I just walk away.

one of these days I'm gonna get punched in the back of the head.

Harley guy at red light: "Why do you wear a helmet?"

Me: I drive away visibly shaking my head not wanting to validate that stupid question with an answer (here's your sign).

I get why don't you just buy a harley cos you're already half way there with a Buell,

I reply they don't do Harley underpants in my size.

Or I say that with my riding style I'd have to replace the floorboards every month.

During the middle of negotiations for a new HD, we were standing next to my XB12S (I wasn't trading in), looking at the V-Rod I just test rode parked next to it... the salesman said, "Ya, you want a real bike anyway. Not that puny thing." All I could think of saying was, "You sure do have a way of making customers feel welcome." Looked at my XB, fired that mutha up and roared away. They WERE a Buell dealer at the time... not surprised they are no longer. I have others but this one always sticks in my head...

I Wish this was mine but it was my buddy (on a vfr) responding to a statement from a Duc rider on my behalf.

statement to me: One disc!?! You feel safe with that thing?!?

My friends reply: HELL NO!! Why do think he wears all that crap?! if he had 2 he'd be wearin a wife beater like you!

His reply?!?... Yeah I can believe that doooddd!

I have *NEVER* heard a discouraging remark about riding a Buell. Quite the opposite actually. Most of the HD guys show a lot of interest in the bikes.

Last year at Hals "Cycle Safe" rally, I helped out with the demo rides. It was funny seeing the chain wallet guys grinning ear to ear after they got off the bikes : )

him "well i used to it was better than that"
me" oh and what kind of bike was it"
him "it was a honda 250"

I've never had someone out and out insult my bike either. H/D employees have been rude to me and treated me with disdain when I brought it in requesting service/warranty work, but didn't literally try to offend me.

As for the public in general, I always draw onlookers when I park the bike. 90% of people don't know what it is. Cagers always have questions, want to look it over, some ask to sit on it, and all say something like, "sure looks fast mister". H/D guys have pretty much ignored me, and other sportbikers want to ride with me to see what it'll do. I get a kick out of beating liter bike riders racing lights through town. And of course, I always get the, "aren't you hot in all that gear?" I too reply, I'd rather sweat than bleed should one of you cagers not see me and cause an accident.

As for my co-workers, I'm the only one in my group that rides. A few have owned bikes in the past. All enjoy gawking at it in the parking lot. I don't ride it to work much since I only live about a mile from the office usually prompts me to just walk. So when I do show up on the bike and in all my gear, there's always extra standing around in the parking lot before going in.

I think a lot of the positive feedback I have received stems from my own positive attitude. I don't argue with people. They're welcome to their own opinion. Yes I love for people to admire my personally customized bike, but if they don't like it, that's OK too. It's not for everyone and I would not recommend everyone try to ride a bike like mine; they'd wind up getting hurt.
