So I have an idea for my little garage. I'd like to put in a ceiling hoist and a storage rack to put the motorcycle and snowmobile up on. My garage is 18' wide, and 12 feet tall, so I have plenty of room to do it. The question is what is the optimum size beam to install to mount the trolly mount hoist on. It can be figured with the "center load simply supported" equation I think, but I can't find it online. The sled and bike are light, so a half ton hoist should do the trick. There are the hand crank models, but I'm thinking I might splurge for the electric type with remote control in the 500.00 range. I've found the trolly slider for around 130.00 new. Now I'm curious about the I-beam size. I know there are some mechanical engineers out there that could figure this in their sleep. If anyone has any ideas to reduce the cost, or have any parts and pieces like this laying around, let me know. | ||

not only will you need a sufficient size beam but supports as well, don't put a heavy beam on a already stressed garage wall... I am sure others will be able to chime in with exact sizes. |
