"A Honolulu police officer died on Sunday from injuries suffered when his motorcycle crashed while escorting President George W. Bush during his Hawaii visit last week." (reuters.com)

I read a short article describing two separate incidents involving motorcycle officers crashing their bikes on wet roads while escorting Bush's motorcade this weekend.

Sounds to me like they must have been running a little fast for the weather. It's a shame to lose an officer and injure three more in not one but two incidents. Talk about needing to ride their own rides...

The news story is here and there is a link to a video of the accident scene.

It was on a sweeper and roads were wet from rain. Sounds like the officer might have got into a curb and made contact with a pole as he went down.

A sad story for sure...

I served a three year sentence in the Honolulu area while I was in the Navy. I know that area where accident took place, there is an aircraft display there we visited a few times.

Hawaii was one of the places where I never got around to buying a bike. Pretty terrifying riding environment.

I never drove or rode anything in Hawaii other than a little scooter 1 day in the dry.

However I did spend more time on guam and if the roads are anywhere near as slick in
the rain as the were there (ground up coral used in the asphalt) then I can see how it
could happen. The first time I was out in the rain there (in a car) and had to stop
quickly I almost slid off the road. It was like being on ice.

I'm a noob to the island life, but I know it rains all of the time. Everyone is pretty used to it. I'd venture a guess and say that the officer hit some oil and not just a patch of water.

Folks were donating blood here for the officer and were asking the family how they could help. Alas, his injuries were too severe...
