I am new to this forum, but been lurking for about 2 months since I purchased an 01 Lightning from a member of this forum that goes by SJH that I'm sure some should know & have some history of this bike & or purchased other bikes from Seth. Reason I am posting this is that I think someone else might have the Direct Link Hardware Key that I need for this bike. After finally working through some other issues with the bike, I purchased a cable from Technoresearch, and trying to do a TPS reset, the SW says my hardware key is for another bike. Using the SW the Key Vehicle ID does list Seth's name, Part ID as S3X1-5 41, But the Calibration ID & VIM is blank. ECU is listed as Buell VDO-EFI. The SW does connect to the bike and monitors throttle %, volts, RPM, Temp, ETC., but when changing to Active settings to reset the TPS it disconnects and says "NEW ECU". When trying to read the ECU the SW says The hardware key is for another bike". The Hardware Key Seth gave me has a technoresearch tag with #4MZSS11J613200858 writin on it. Being saturday any help would not be available from technoresearch. I'm hoping I am doing something wrong with the software or worst case, my hardware key just got mixed up with someone elses and I can track it down. I will not be a happy camper if I gotta spend another $250 for another hardware key. Any suggestions, recommendations, or any help would be greatly appreciated.

I believe once it has been used with an ECM it will only work with that ECM. I do not think you can use it again with a different ECM. I think you have to buy another key to use it with a new ECM.

Thanks I do know that the key can only be used for the one particular ECU it was meant for, but I can imagine how I coulda got the wrong key. I'm hoping I'm doing something wrong with the software.

I'm hoping someone here is familiar with Seth who sold me the bike & might know who the tuner was so maybe I can contact them & see what they know about the key I do have.

Thanks Again,
Gene

Gene,
Seth's a good guy, I'm pretty sure he'll chime in and answer your question.
I do know he's been really busy lately. He's a school teacher...

Gene,
I sent a response to the email you sent me.

I kinda doubt you have the wrong key. It is more likely that the key you have has been corrupted. Earlier versions of the SW could corrupt a key easier than later versions, but it is still possible to corrupt a key with newer versions. A key is corrupted when a couple checksums stored in the security key don't match the checksums in the ECM. This can easily happen if the key is removed during programming. But I have a suspicion that there are some other key corrupting scenarios.

I think there is a bug in the SW, but can't prove it. I haven't corrupted a key in 9 months, and I use it a lot. But I know of a couple folks that have corrupted keys when I'm pretty sure they were doing things correctly. I'm working with Techno to find the source of the problem, but it would be easier for me to help them if I personally could corrupt a key following normal procedures. So far, I haven't been able to.

Only Technoresearch can refresh a corrupted key. I can't do it.

Thanks for the replys and good info. No hurry this week now. Just blew another head gasket in other cylinder.} Gotta get that fixed 1st before I go any further with the direct link. When I got the bike one cylinder stud pulled out of the stripped hole in the case that caused the blown head gasket. Same thing this time on the other cylinder. Not a happy camper here..........

Genep,

We mapped your X1 and never had any problems with it reading or writing. What version of the software are you using to read it with? I can send you a copy of the old version it was written with to see if it will work with that.

Please let me know if there is anything we can do to help!

Josh
