As of right now, though, the bike isn't legal for any Superbike class. Guess Ducati is betting it all on a rule change... |

I'll reserve my opinion until I've seen it in the flesh, but............ The sss arm is ugly. They've tried too hard with the twin pipes. They should have kept the 999 style pipe. That was one area of design from the 999 that us 916 purists had no objection to. Later peeps.. Rocket Oh and I pray that front end doesn't look as Japanese in the flesh as it does in the pic's. R1 anyone? (Message edited by rocketman on November 08, 2006) |

I have been waiting with the intention of buying this bike, however according to the MCN article ,it is faster than a GSXR1K around a track,1/4 mile etc. I think it is too much. Price is right though. |

I'll reserve my opinion until I've seen it in the flesh, but............ Yeah, looks like a 916 and a 999 had a one night stand and this is the result... |

Much better looking than the 999. The front does look Japanese but the rest looks like a step back to 916-996. I think it's a keeper. |

Hmmm.. I kinda like it.. Any idea on the prices yet? I like the 916esq cues to it. And as stated above, I too wish they had kept the 999 style exhaust. Wonder if they'll have an 'R' version. And, lastly, does anyone know if this is the replacement for the 999 or are they going to produce both bikes? (Might make a 999 cheaper huh?) |

I agree with Rocket about the pipes, but other than that it's dead sexy. |

Never liked those rectangular pipes anyway. New ones look much better. By the way, what's a 916 purist? I have a 996. Does that make me a 996 purist? I also have a Lightning. Maybe I'm a Lightning purist. I'm confused. |

The front looks like a Triumph 675 to me...it looks good but I think they should have done something that is more unique. |

999 is done. Rumor is the R is coming out in 08 or late 07 with a conventional swingarm and I think with another 100cc. |

Funny... someone says the bike looks too Japanese 'cause it resembles an R1, yet most people like the look of the R1 because it looks Italian. Go figure! |

that's nice! I agree about the headlights/front...I'm not super keen on them...put the 916/996/998 headlights/front on it and I'll take 2! ah well, back to cruising eBay... |

I like the horizontally apposed headlights better than the vertical. Vertical headlights remind me of a buddy's 49cc Aprilla. |

A conventional swingarm would look a hell of a lot better. The exhaust setup looks like something that they forgot about and added last minute. Now, 160 horse and 3 grand cheaper then a basic 999, that has my attention. I am going to hold our for 2008 though, I hear that good things are one their way from our favorite manufacturer. |

The Ducati faithful are going to hate me for this, but I was riding home on the 9sx today, and saw a red bike about 3 car lengths ahead and fairly obstructed. Nice sound, nice bike! I thought to myself. It's a twin, single sided swingarm, that must be a superhawk! Neat! It was, of course, a 998. Glad I didn't talk to the guy, I think the 998 is a very cool bike, just like I think a superhawk is a very cool bike, but he probably would not have appreciated my confusion |

Saw a 749 Dark today... It was pretty cool... I'll wait to see what Buell does this year and if it's not enough I think I'll pick one of those up (or maybe a used 998...). I have a feeling it'll be the Buell. They only need to get within about 25HP of that to make me happy. (Message edited by M1Combat on November 09, 2006) |

Frankfast(food?), in the world of things Ducati there is a huge following for the 916 genre, which includes your 996. A great many of these Ducatisti have not taken to the 999 as was expected by Ducati. These are the people who are regarded as 916 purists. That said, these same people don't go around wearing Ducati motor clothing bearing emblems '916 Purist'. Nor have Ducati brought to market a 'Purist' model. I do believe the term '916 purist' is a journalistic term used affectionately to describe the fans of the great 916 genre of motorcycle. Just because you own a 996 doesn't make you a 'Purist' either. For that to happen you have to swear allegiance to meatloaf and Chianti and kiss Pope Benedict XVI arse every Sunday. Even then you're not guaranteed to make the grade. Owning a Buell doesn't help either. Trust me on that one! Rocket |
