That bike is awesome, and only $4,500 more than a firebolt...

I don't know how you bash that bike.

I'm curious to see what they'll do with the 749...If it has the same looks as the 1098 and has a similar price reduction....uh oh!

Even though liquid cooled high horsepower bikes suck, I'd still consider one.

Oh yeah, give me an air cooled slug that can't get out of it's own way any day (no, I'm NOT talking about Buells, just responding to Spatten1's comment above).

Great price for sure. But I like the looks of the 998 and even the 999 a LOT more than the 1098.

Thus far that is exactly my thinking too.

The front end just looks way to Japanese for me. I hope it is not so.

Rocketman - I've seen 916 "purists". The ones with the expensive leathers and clean fingernails forking over $2000 for a tuneup on their superbike. At the risk of sounding sentimental, I bought a '74SS brand new. It took me to the race track where I enjoyed the most exciting times of my life. I spent my meager carpenters salary keeping that bike together to race every weekend. I learned to shim the valves and split the cases myself, making weekly trips to Reno Leonis garage for race parts. I even took a photo of Dr.T in the cafeteria in the Bologna factory and perused the exotic hardware in the bins at the NCR garage. Recently, I took my roundcase SS for a state inspection at a nearby Ducati dealer. All those "purist" didn't even know what it was or cared. The term makes me a little ill.

I'm a purist/w many factory Duc tools.996.The new bike is the coolest. They've gone after hp with displacement. While keeping with the twin theme. That's what the next gen Buell just needs.Like 4.25" bores? Big bore rr cases for the masses.

By the way, what's a 916 purist? I have a 996. Does that make me a 996 purist? I also have a Lightning. Maybe I'm a Lightning purist. I'm confused.

Well best I can say Frank is your question sounded like it held a little sarcasm to my 'purist' reference. Seems I was right because the term makes you ill it turns out.

So my answer was meant as a little sarcasm in return BUT it also contained some humour. Obviously that passed you by.

Why you should be offended that a new generation of Ducati personnel didn't recognise your antique is hardly reason to be so bitter toward them. You're getting on in years. They're not.

Hell, I've no desire in the world to own a Ducati older than my 916. I wasted that privilege on Triumphs and Harleys during my youthful period. I bought a Buell to outgrow the dirty fingernail business. How wrong was I. Still, I've no desire to want to go backwards. The next bike I look forward to getting oil under my fingernails from will be a Brutale. Until then I'll continue to manicure.

Meanwhile, give those clean fingernail Ducati owners a little slack. It's hardly their fault the brand is reliable these days.

I have to give my two cents here. I bought a 07 s4rs a month ago and can say without a doubt it is awesome!!! I also own a bmw k1200r and a lighting 2004. I love my buell and in a fair comparison the ducati I have costs more. But mt god what a machine!!! I like all bikes but t is my wish that a american manufacture would step up and build a sport bike that could compete. Sorry about the spelling errors just got off a 14 hour shift and am a little buzzed. On topic I think ducati has done a great job with the 1098 and will be putting down my deposit on a black onee if I can. The first place I will go is the track and then the us 129. Maybe it has something to do with my last name being DePodesta but I love the italian bikes, a big plus being a twin. Come on HD let Mr. Buell lose to build a race eng!!!

The 916 and 998 were beautiful machines. A god in the world of twin machines, but the 999 was outhouse ugly. Just that front end treatment ruined the whole bike. The 1098 is again a beautiful machine. I would take one in anything but black if someone else was paying for the insurance. I told my wife when we got married that someday I would own a Ducati race bike and it would hang from chains in the house foyer so I could pray to it every morning. I better warn her of their new machine.

Hey Rocketman - My objection to your self proclamation as a 916 "purist" is based solely on my observations of the new breed of Ducati riders more interested in posing than appreciating. I don't expect that new owners ought to be given a history lesson on the mark before they buy one but you, on the other hand, as a "purist", are required. I hope that your admiration goes beyond the delicious fiberglass that you see here and that you might have to clean those manicured fingergnails after performing your next oil change. Know that the next time you identify yourself as a "purist", the only one being impressed is yourself. That being said, any further comments on this matter will only bring a smile to my wrinkled face.

Well Frank, if it brings a smile to your wrinkled face .........

I have never referred to myself as a Ducati purist so you have nothing to object to.

I own a 916. Maybe it will make you smile some more if I show you a nice pic?

And Frank, I do get my fingernails dirty. That comes with the job. I'm a mechanic / garage owner specialising in Saab. Started out as an apprentice motorcycle mechanic and switched to cars later.

Keep up the good work.

What you have to like on it is the view from the front and back, very narrow profile with no stray 'bits' hanging out, very narrow. But the extra 5K over a 10K R1/Gixxer/ZX something or another and the Desmo valve adjustment requirement are still deal breakers for me.

"That was one area of design from the 999 that us purists had no objection to." I seem to be missing something Rocketman. Anyway, nice bike. I have a red one also. By the way, I had a two stroke three cylinder Saab a long long time ago. Worst piece of crap on four wheels.

My you are argumentative Frank, lol.

That two stroke piece of crap just happened to be one of the most successful rally cars of all time. Guess you missed that one too

There, I corrected it just for you Frank, hehe!!!

Sorry Rocketman. I don't pretend to know the history of Saab automobiles. I have only my own experience to back up my opinion. Perhaps I was too harsh. I did like (and still do) the body shape of that car. I think it deserved a better motor. Maybe a 327 Corvette fuel injected would do. Peace.

taking a look at the Ducati model line-up that went up on their web site yesterday they've totally revamped their product line, I think the ST3 and the Monster S2R are the only models that are more than a year old.

the Monster 695 is now the only mid cost/entry level bike Ducati offers.

All the remaining models are premium high margin bikes... the new Superbike, the new Hypermotard, the Sport Classics, the new 1100cc Multistrada, the Desmosedici and the Monsters

pretty impressive for such a small company to develop so many new bikes in just a couple years.

Don't worry about it. You commit no crime in believing so!

I'm excited to see it in the flesh at last. It's been a long week since MCN first showed it last Wednesday. Then I was somewhat disappointed, it looking too Oriental for an Italian. The above pic gives me hope. More so considering the big name Italian designers of old are not employed in the 1098 design. Whether or not that's a good thing, remains to be......................................

seen in the flesh.
