Hey all, I've gotta get an engine (auto) from St Louis area, MO to SLC, UT my house for my car. Anyone got some hook-ups for a sweet deal on shipping? Current quotes from 63052 to 84123 are coming in at $250. (570lbs, 40x36x36) Is that good? The engine is crated and will be dropped to the shipper but I am trying for a residential delivery. $250 is good as long as it's a 5 day or less transit time. What carrier are you using? Most will be able to refer you to a local liftgate service in your area. Depending on how far you are from the terminal, I'd expect you to be shelling out about another $100 to $150 for that part. If the same carrier has liftgate service then it should only be like an extra $60. | ||

That quote was from Unishippers, delivered to my place. Discount Freight quoted $226 but I requested both a doorstep and a terminal rate, they didn't stipulate which they were giving me, I'll just have to call them I guess. I've never shipped freight, just seems like a lot and I don't want to get ripped off... Thanks for the quick response Pwnzor. | ||

No problem, I can tell you $250 is not a lot to carry 570lbs. almost 1400 miles. Unishippers is pretty good, they have a chain of command that you can go through if something goes wrong, which it usually doesn't with them, in my experience. I've done a lot of work for/with them. I can't say the same about discount freight. Go with Unishippers, they're big and have a pretty good rep in the industry. If (god forbid) something goes wrong with your delivery (it won't) let me know, I may have a string or two I can pull. My contacts are here in California but the all talk to each other. BTW, don't be surprised if the truck that shows up to your place has a different company name on it. It will come with Unishipper paperwork on an affiliate's vehicle. They farm out a lot of work to local carriers (like me) with whom they have working relationships and their quality control is quite good. (they use me, don't they?) I keep thinking of how many PB&J sandwiches I could make for $25, but I think that the discount co will also make up the money somewhere else, tacking on fees or what ever. Thanks again for your advice, nice to hear from someone in the industry. -Mike | ||

Called them (unishippers) to get it done, then they started adding prices for residential plus lift gate, I told them what I needed when I got the quote yesterday, any way the price went up to $446. Bummer. Hate to go with the "no name brand" but with all the extras they come in at $376. Been putting my overtime and teaching money in the bank all summer so I can get my car working for the winter (bad motor), but spending this money is just killing me... | ||

Well, that happens, I misunderstood when you said $250 to your place. It would have definitely been a great price. Being is it's a motor in a crate, damage is unlikely. Usually what happens with discount operations is you have to wait a little bit longer, while they consolidate truckloads. Empty trailers are a losing proposition. Unshippers still gets my "good-guy" vote. | ||

Have you tried ForwardAir? They can't ship to your house but their prices are reasonable. I'm sure you can find SOMEBODY with a trailer to help get it home. Just an idea. | ||

As an expert in the field of transportation who has had extensive dealings with ForwardAir, I must insist that you exhaust every other avenue before resorting to using them. Just take my word for it, there are plenty of other options. If I enter into a diatribe about WHY not to use them, you'd fall asleep reading it.
