I did up a spreadsheet and a series of PDF maps for a fellow on the Triumph RAT page. Email me at bmullens at gmail.com and I'll forward them to you on Monday (they're on the work computer). The route I fixed up for him starts in Morgantown and runs on all 2-lane roads through Grafton, Philippi, Buckhannon, Webster Springs, Valley Head, Marlington, Lewisburg, Hinton, Rainelle and Summersville. Mark, Don't know how you plan to get to Charleston, but the AA/Hwy 9 through KY is beautiful and not heavily traveled. AA will drop you onto 64 just outside of Charleston. It will take about 3 1/2 - 4 hours from Blue Ash. Sure beats the boring 275 to SR32 ride! Safe travels, Kristi | ||

There is a RAT rally at Canaan Valley, near Elkins, WV, on September 15-17. came from Norfolk, to charlottsville VA, then to 35/33 in Ohio, East to West across WV all back roads via a wal-mart map, last year. truely awesome roads, LostinOhio is right watch out for deer as I tapped one doing about 5 miles an hour, got lucky... | ||

Be sure to see the New River Bridge. Stop off and walk down to the observation deck. It is truly amazing.   The New River Gorge Bridge is located on U. S. Route 19, just north of Fayetteville, WV. It is easily reached from Interstates 64, 77, & 79 and from U. S. Route 60 (Midland Trail). It is approximately 30 minutes north of Beckley, 70 minutes east of Charleston, and 70 minutes south of Interstate 79. | ||

The AA will drop you west of Huntington WV on I-64. If you live anywhere but the East side of Cincinnati, it is the fastest way and like Kristi said, it is a beautiful road to cruise. If you live Batavia way, US-32 to US-35 is hard to beat. I rode US-52 from I-64 to Virginia. Only problem is too much traffic. I see on Jose's sites that US-16 is listed. I do not know if you plan to head that far south, but US-16 from US-52 to I-81 by Marion VA is AWESOME. In Virginia the route goes due south and the mountains go SW/NE so you end up crossing four mountain passes in 25 miles. The routes are very technical, some one told me they were old wagon trail paved over and I believe it. Allot of switch backs and at the top of one pass you have a Z-Curve across the top of the ridge. Watch out of gravel on the road though. | ||

Thanks for the great ideas and links. I've been away from my computer for a few days so I am just catching up. My kids go to Ohio University so I am sure I will take 32 and stop by for a few hours with them before heading to Charleston. I will check out the AA on the way back. Xring, my e-mail is on the way. Canaan Valley is absolutely beautiful!!!!!!!!! been there a few years back with a MR2 Club from Charlottesville, VA. i really don't think you can go wrong on any paved road in W.VA, VA. |
