Does anyone know if the fairing on a thunderbolt can be easily removed? If you do take it off does it leave the gauges hanging out looking ugly? Can you fairly easily put on a lightning fairing and use the same gages? I'd like to get a thunderbolt. I've only been lucky enough to see 1 in person. Any help would be very nice. thanks | ||

easily removed? yes, not too many bolts. Gages hanging out, ugly? well, yeah, along with the "spider" mounting gear, it's not very pretty. But neither is a Ninja or Ducati with the plastic off. If you have all the bits & pieces for BOTH, the Cyclone M2 & Thunderbolt S3 rigs can be swapped in a few hours. ( I'm guessing 1 1/2 with practice, 3-4 the first time. ) But the only thing that you really can reuse on the 2 rigs are the gages. Even the handlebar clamp is different. ( the Cyclone's gages are mounted on the clamp, the Thunderbolts on the spider. I assume the S1 or X1 are like the M2 ) Odds are, you won't want to do so. The Thunderbolt fairing is really light, & aero, so there is almost no penalty. If you want a S1 or X1 Lightning, get one of those instead. Others may have more informed opinions. I have a M2 with a S3 fairing, & like it that way. | ||

I have both an S1 and an S3 and it can be done fairly easily if you have the right components. You need the headlight, headlight brackets, gauge pod, and handlebar clamp from either and S1 or X1 (the M2 uses a different fork so I suspect the headlight brackets are not transferable even though you can mount the S3 fairing setup to an M2, but that mounts to the headstock not the fork tubes). | ||

The fairing comes off quick and easy. The gauges and spider come off easily, too, though the connectors are a little bit of a pain. Not sure who's idea it was to make the brake connectors and the turn signal connectors capable of crossing each other, but it can be done. Follow the color codes on the wires and you'll be fine. Don't reassemble at dusk! | ||

Thank-you everyone for your input. As for 99buellx1's question I like the 2 up fit of the s3's. I just am not a fan of the look of the faring on the s3. I understand the usefullness of it, but I like the look of a naked bike. The less plastic the better for me. Thanks again |
