I sent the Mrs. and my boys back home to Chicago a few months ago for 4 days and I threw my saddlebags on the horse and rode out to nowhere and solo camped on some federal land. It's great sleeping in a hammock in the desert.

A part of me was thing of doing the same thing. Throw a sleeping bag on the back of the bike and just go somewhere. I still have 8 vacation days left for the year.

It's liberating to camp alone. Especially on one of the many hundreds of federally managed land plots where it's "pack-in pack-out" dry camping with no facilities except a fire pit.

There is no nagging.

There are no kids screaming.

Your eyes can relax at night with no glaring lights.

The songs of the desert, mountains, praries, whatever, are your personal serenade.

When I camp I eat MRE's just like what our Military men and women do over in Iraq. They are actually not too bad and I can live quite comfortably on 1 or 2 per day. Your only limit is how much water you can carry. Some of the sites have drinkable water but I still use purification tablets or a little filter I carry. I had this grey fox adopt me for a few days on my last trip. He would come right into my camp and sit about 6 feet away from the fire, directly opposite me. I tossed him scraps and he would approach and actually sit there eating without running away. I nicknamed her Foxy Brown and we had some great conversations. What a great listener.

If you do it, I highly recommend a hammock. Make yourself a kit to go with it, with all kinds of hooks and connectors and extra rope so you can tie off to just about anything that can hold some weight. It is so much better than sleeping on the ground and not nearly as bulky as an air mattress or ground pad.

Have fun, whatever you do. It's your vacation.

Don't feed wildlife please. You're not doing them any favours and in most places it's illegal. Have fun, be at peace, leave no trace.

Wish I knew, I'm not even fit enough to feed the wildlife here at the moment!

I have off till Friday!

Just dropped the wife off to take care of my ailing mother!

On the way back, the Big Kid and the Little Kid were asking what we were going to do for fun, the Little Kid suggested strippers!

Enjoy yourself.
I just got back from a week off.
Spent some time up at the Deals Gap area for some great ride time.
This is the first time I took off any time for me during the summer. Could be habit forming.
I do take off every year for March Badness.
A little time away from the family is good.
Makes coming home so much nicer!
Coming home ranks up there with time away.
