I had to buy tires today for my S1W went to a jap dealer and wasn't thinking and had them put on a 160-60-17 instead of a 170-60. This shouldn't change the handling much should it?

I dont know about in line traction or ware but you will find that it will cornor a lot better, I was told that was why they scuff the sides on the 180.

I had the same thing happen to me before.
Only I didn't notice that it was a 160 until I wore it out and had it replaced!

Handling and acceleration should both improve. You don't really have the hp to need the grip of a 170 series tire.

Rain traction will also improve. I typically run one size down for street bikes when I change the first tire.

Correct me if I'm wrong someone, but didn't the S1W come with a 5.5 inch rim width on the rear, unless you had the PM wheel which is a 6 inch wide rim? Pretty sure that's the case because my Dymag rear is 6 inch which I recall as the same as the PM which is 1/2 inch wider than the stock rear rim. That's the way I remember it.

So the point is this. A 160 width tyre is way to narrow for a 5.5 inch rim, and even more so for a 6 inch width rim.

You want to be on a 180 / 55 x 17 or a 190 / 60 x 17 on the rear. I'm not 100% sure but I think 170 is the narrowest tyre recommended for a 5.5 inch rim (not 6 inch), but don't quote me. Even a 170 on a 5.5 inch rim might be a little extreme. Please seek expert advice as I believe you are way out using a 160 on the rear which can bring to bear all sorts of problems regarding overheating, profile, wear and even seating and tyre shift under extreme use.

The PM wheel is 5.5" wide.

A 160/60-17 will work on a 5" wide wheel.
