There is an autonomous motorcycle called "Ghostrider" which competed in the DARPA Grand Challenge in 2005.

Check out one of the many stories here: http://engineeringnews.tamu.edu/news/1259

if you're good enough you don't need no stinking balancing device. somebody posted a video of an asian guy doing the slalom with no hands riding a honda 250, last year, it was amazing.

i do stand-up figure eights on my lightning, no handed. not really much trick there, the bike is quite stable idling in second gear.

no-hands riding should be a cinch;

if it's not, then you're relying too much on upper-body jamming in your turns.
i could always ride any road on my bmw airheads fitted with throttlemeister cruise ends, with or without hands.
slalom is a cinch when you have your 'leading with foot-roll, then knee-roll' tech down...esp. w/good upper/lower body separation/hip angulation
not quite as easy on my s2, thanks to the absurdly stunted steering radius afforded by the inverts. cinch on the m2, though

Isn't a bike inherently stable because of the gyroscopic effect of the wheels?

Read the last paragraph, that says everything.

In addition, it states the bike will not reach lean angles as past conventional machines... so go ahead in remove those knee pucks if you intend to purchase one, they are no longer needed.

Dumb in my opinion, why don't they cater to the senior/handicapped riders first before trying to make those who aren't capable of even balancing themselves roadworthy? I'm sure Brian would like a bike with "deployable" supports when stopped or at minimal speed to prevent a tip-over.

You think that's scary? The UK government have just tested recently a speed controlled bike.

This is a serious effort into looking at slowing down to legal speed limits by the powers that be.

It is in fact so serious that this weeks MCN launched a campaign to have the speed controlled bike scrapped.

This country is f**ked I tell ya.

As if that isn't enough, legislation has just been passed giving local councils the green light to nominate rural roads for new speed limits set to 40mph. The legal jargon allows any A or B road, and minor road, to come under lower speed limit legislation if said road has twisting bends or hills along its length, no matter how far off the beaten track the road is.

I need to live in France if this comes into force.

OK, this Yamaha thing is a solution in search of a problem.

Who here can't keep their bike upright while riding it? I don't see too many hands...

I can't... it always somehow manages to reach some rather extreme lean angles when in the turns, and I don't like it.. I think I need a bike that will stabilize itself and have half the ability to maneuver as my present ride.

Come on, I'd think the majority of Buell owners knew that Buell's were rated the #1 cornering motorcycles... I like it when the bike waits on my very input to react, I also like the ability to lean low, and go to the inside of "the other guy".

Take this idea to the "memory warehouse".

It won't be long before we have to wait for a green light to step out of our own front door.

No surrender, I've already invaded, he's just coming as reinforcement.

That's a typical US knee-jerk reaction, jump to the wrong conclusion, never mind, we'll let you know when we need you so you can join in half way through & say you won at the end as usual.

Bikes that stand on their own are cool. I'd like to think it wouldn't fall over if I get drunk and forget to put my feet down.
