I have a 2000 M2 I bought recently it has 3500 miles on it now and today I noticed when I open the throttle all the way the bike would stutter a bit and not respond like normal, then when I got home I looked around and noticed oil seeping from the area where the rocker cover joins the head. Would this leak cause the problem? And how common is this and is it an easy repair?

I think every 2000 M2 developed the leak at about the same mileage. The cure is to replace the paper gaskets with the newer metal gaskets.

The Knowledge Vault is full of info on this, everything you need to know.

If your M2 is stock here are some of the things you need to do to perfect it:

1 - Make sure you have the upgraded primary chain tensioner (don't wait until the old one fails).

2 - Do the #45 slow speed jet and idle mixture mod to improve low speed running and smoothness. The M2's are way too lean as delivered. Details in the KV.

3 - Replace your intake manifold seals while you have the carb off, they are prone to developing air leaks there and the seals should be replaced every couple of years or so.

4 - Make sure your drive belt is not too tight. It needs to be quite a bit looser than the service manual says to avoid over stressing the bearing and seal on the transmission output side. And it is hard on the belt too.

5 - Get a service manual and parts list and do your own work if you are capable of it. The happiest Buell owners are those that do their own work.

I would take a good look @ the KV. I had the same problem with my M2, 3300 miles. Somehow I convinced my buell shop to fix it, no charge with out a warranty! Go with the metal gaskets! My shop would have normally charged about $400 to replace the two rocker gaskets.

As far as common, the tech said "they (sportster motors with paper gaskets) all go out around 3000 miles."

All of what Jack said above.
You have two problems.
First, replace BOTH rocker box gaskets with the new metal version.
You only have one leaking now, the other will start shortly. Not if, when.

Second, I would very strongly suspect the intake gaskets.
Replace both manifold gaskets and the carb "boot" gasket.

The most important thing GET THE SERVCE MANUAL!

Oh yeah, it's all in the KV somewhere.
