Never had a GMC before, but won't give Ford another chance.

I am looking at the 5.3L Crew cab, 4x4.

GMC/Chevy owners....your thoughts please.

I leased a 2006 Chevy Crew Cab Silverado, short box in April, although it's a 2wd. I've always been a GM guy and so far I've been very happy with it. The mileage has steady improved, both city and highway and I'm really spoiled with all the bells and whistles!

The Crew Cab is the only way to go!!

I won't ask why you gave up on Ford, I love all my Ford vehicles. My neighbor has a 2003 GMC 3/4 ton 4x4 Crewcab Longbed with the Duramax diesel. He loves it, I've driven it, it's a great truck and I would recommend it right alongside mine as an equal choice to anyone. My uncle just got a 2006 Chevy Crew Cab 3/4 ton Shortbed, with the largest gas motor they make and he hauls a 40 foot 5th wheeler around like its a toy, says the truck is awesome, so there you go.

I have the 5.3L motor in my 2004 Silverado. Its a good motor with just enough power/towing capacity. I would not go with the smaller V-8's. My father has the 6.0L and there is a noticable increase in the power. It just seems to "get up and go" easier.

The redesigned Sierras are in the process of being released. Check link to see pic's: http://www.gminsidenews.com/forums/showthread.php?p=703491
If you are okay with the current generation, wait for the new ones to hit the lots and then really get a deal on an '06. Oh, I agree with not going with the smaller engine. A work buddy just got one, then got a toy hauler, and now regrets having gotten the small V-8.

Last time I checked, Chevys diesel engine for thier trucks had aluminum heads. I'm sure they have engineered the hell out of them to make them right, but it still bugs me. I'd rather have cast iron heads on a high-compression diesel.

I just went with another Ford 5.4 but got the F-150 this time. Aaron has the GMC and has nothing but good things to say about it. I think most the pickups have made great strides.

I passed on the 4WD and have yet to hard a convincing argument from anybody, except Don Casto who drives and F-350 on a ranch in Colorado, why they need it. It costs a ton and adds about 425 parts to the "what can go wrong list". I opted for the big wheels to get that "hey look at me way up here" look that folks REALLY buy 4WD for.

My bet is you can't got wrong with most the pickups out there...it's a matter of taste. I wanted CHEAP so I went fairly bare bones F-150 XLT for something like $25K.

P.S. - if you, like Aaron, have a 1/4 mile long dirt driveway and live in the Rockies, I'd get the 4WD. I have a procedure I follow, if my 2WD truck won't leave the drive, neither do I.

Nice court... see I likes the 4WD.. I come from a GM family. Always bought Chevy, GMC trucks.. basically the exact same trucks, same assembly lines, just different exteriors. They are tough like most trucks out there. just don't flog the crudd out of the engine and you will be all good. Get an FIPK kit, and possibly Flowmaster muffler they will improve your Gas Milage, and you will love the crew cab.. ROOMIE AS HECK! get a nice 5" lift on it and play Larry the Cable guy OVER AND OVER!

GET R DONE!! lol ok serious, trucks now a days are not bad from one company to another, just get the ones that fit you the best and enjoy. See I am from the GM family like i said.. but I LIKE DODGE TRUCKS! just cause they look tougher.. lol
But the GM trucks have WAY more options to choose from. gotta like the toys

Wow... the 2007 Sierra looks great.

I might have to retire my 1990 Sierra.

i'm looking more at the tahoe/yukon because i have 3 kids and would like something that seats at least 7. problem is, my wife wants the jeep commander , how do i convince her that the tahoe is a better deal ? we have a cherokee sport(2001) now and we really like the vehicle we just need more room and something with shoulder harnesses for 5.

I think all the Big 3's trucks are great these days. My other neighbor has a Dodge 3500 SLT Crewcab Longbed Dually, Cummins Diesel, 7 speed Eaton Fuller Transmission, Exhaust brake, Banks Power setup etc etc...

He pulls a 35 foot 5th wheeler, and a 19 foot ski boat behind that. Can't back up but what the heck. Says he uses the passing lanes going up hill.

I have a 2004 1500 Silverado Crew Cab 4x4. So far, it has been great. The crew cab as mentioned earlier is the only way to go. Plenty of power (5.3L), rides nice. I did not like the look of the stock tires so I tossed them at 5k miles and put on Dueler A/T Revos. Getting about 15 to 16 mpg with it.

Kenb,

The only real problem with jeeps is the small fuel tank, limiting tow range. I think the commander has the 20 gal tank that my Gr.Cherokee has. Huge problem towing west of mississippi. Real pain dumping gas from cans into tank to get the range a 34 gal tank has.

Thanks for the feedback guys!

I hooked up with a 2006 Z71 4x4 Sierra, leather, Sirrus, Onstar, 5.3L, Crew Cab, and 17" rims, tow package, etc. Tomorrow I use it to carry our dirt bikes to the dirt!

Yippeeee!!

Congrats! That truck is gonna be a blast. I thought I'd regret the leather in my 4x4 but it's a blessing let me tell you.

just picked a dodge quadcab hemi 2500 with the 6spd manual. wasn't able to find a gm, or ford with the motor/transmission combination i wanted(would have bought either one if available).

started out just trying to replace my toyota tacoma, dealer wanted more for the new tacoma than dodge did for the 2500. it seems all of the manufacturers are producing decent trucks. curious to see toyota's new heavy duty truck when it arrives.

What I meant is I thought it would get thrashed with being exposed to all the dirt but it held up great.

I did think about that aspect, but I gure if I do extendede camping, etc I'll just get seat covers. I love having a nice leather interior when I'm just driving or being chased by the police. ;)

If you really like leather, get a custom leather sofa or chair from Arizona Leather. I bought the Mrs. an 84" classic for her knitting room and for us (me) in the living room is a 10' x 8' sectional custom. Our running joke is that some day the couches will get married and have baby ottomans. They have several different grades of leather, I recommend Mesa Nubuck Rawhide, it ain't cheap but my god, it's worth it.

To give you an idea of price range, the 84" classic sofa in Mesa Nubuck Rawhide was $2000 but we got it for $1500 because we chose a color that was being discontinued, but they still had plenty in stock! The 8' x 10' sectional is a high-back style with double-pillowed seat cushions. That baby was $4400, no discount there.

The price tag can be a tough pill to swallow and it is very difficult to NOT fall asleep on these couches. But you get over it every time you sit down. We joke often that the couches contain some kind of sleeping powder or perhaps carry a curse.
