This was taken from the Koblenz Polizei report - Bad day at the Nurburgring….. Sunday 11 Jun 10:30. A 24 year old on a Honda CBR 1000 motorcycle looses control of his bike on the hill in Fuchsröhre a very high speed section of the track with small but blind uphill corner, after tumbling more than 100 meters he was struck by a car who had no time to brake, rider suffered fatal injuries. Because of the location of crash two more bikers’ age 42 & 48 approached at high speed and were not able to stop in time to avoid the oil and debris on the track, both crash suffering light injuries. Seconds later a Porsche 997 and a M5 BMW approach but manage to stop in time, but a 54 year old man on a Ducati traveling close behind the Porsche could not stop in time hitting the rear of the Porsche, the force of the impact throws the 54 year old man over the car landing in front of the BMW he also suffers fatal injuries.

Wait...Do tracks normally have cars and bikes on at the same time? Sounds like you're just asking for trouble with that combination. |

From what i've heard about nurburgring it's open to the public and they don't really care what you take out on the track. |

I've run it on bmw motorcycles and in bmw cars. it's pretty zany. You can reserve time slots on it, however. manufacturer slots (and days) ensure much better control. |

This is the Nurburgring, it's available to all, you turn up with your road legal vehicle, pay your fee & take your turn. It's that simple. Even the motoring shows & mags get no preferential treatment, they take their turn like everyone else. About the only time it's closed to the public is race days & due to bad weather. There's advantages to living Europe! |

....and, as i'd said, when manufacturer days and slots occur. trust me, they close it to the public for audi, bmw, mb, etc. |

It's, for the most part, wide open after you pay the entrance fee. I don't remember the exact amounts, but it was like $20/15euro for one lap and it went down if you purchased more time. $1000 would get you a years pass. I was a very lucky guy and lived about 50 miles from the track and I got to spend stupid amounts of time there -- mostly in cars. It will have some non-public days if a big manufacturer wants it but it won't be a surprise. G2 |

there's something.... it's hard to put my finger on it...but something i prefer about sliding a sporting car around a road track, as opposed to a motorcycle, much of the time.... |

Buses and coaches are allowed as well (it is a tourist attraction after all) but I think they draw the line at HGVs otherwise it would be no different from Stourbridge ring road |

I have a large group of riding buddies that were considering going here to run the track. I was hesitant (before I received this article) because of the long straights... now they aren't very interested. |

Kyle, There's a club (well, a group of guys/owners/enthusiasts) that hangout on the old flight line at Bitburg and they go run The Ring frequently. Bunch of 911's, at least one Sub WRX, some other stuff. The old base has all kinds of 'stuff' on it just keep working your way to the back and you'll find them at the gasthaus,,,,, G2 |

"...it was like $20/15euro for one lap and it went down if you purchased more time. " $20 a lap? On the Nurburgring? Holy crap! I know what I'm doing the next time I'm in Deutschland... I hope Avis has a sense of humor. |

Kyle, If you go to Spang, short hop for you too, and don't make it all the way to Schnee Eifel you'll be haunted for life :-) The vast majority of my family's located 14Km from the front gate of Spang -- the back way from Spang to Prum (Jen's place.) Glad to see you fellows working together. When's the party? I'll be in Densborn/Kylburg in 5 weeks if nothing goes crazy here. G2 |

They aren't. No one sets off at the same time. Coming across an accident might not be that unusual at the Ring, but a fatal one is a rarity. No need to halt mans freedoms any further thank you. We have enough of that in our every day lives. We certainly don't need it in our adventure pastimes \ activities. You know, one day it might not be safe to step out of your own home without being issued a government warning or directive! Yawn. Rocket |

G2- The 21/22 is when I am going, not sure about the 23rd.... oh all in july. Cars and bikes are on the track at the same time (obviously) but they don't neccessarily start at the same time. The car might have gotten there earlier in the day and has been running laps for awhile before the bike even arrived, or the other way around. It is popular among track goers for its lack of rules; likewise it is famous for its danger and risks. |

The Ring is like Mt Everest, anyone who goes there should know they could die there, neither is a good place for fools and even the best can have bad luck. BUT it is your choice to make, like riding the TT course on Mad Sunday, no one makes you do it. Is it dangerous, yes. So is riding a bike in Manhatten and many here do that! |

Trumpo, I don't need you to try correct me thanks. My comment was a little bit of sarcasm, which should have been obvious from the content of my post. Every vehicle sets off from the get go on its own. Hence, not on the same piece of track at the same time. Obviously vehicles of different average speeds will at some point maybe catch up, stay with or pass one another. For the most part, the idea of having a machine start the lap, is to avoid having vehicles of a similar average speed pacing the course together. Racing against one another is against the rules. The experience is about pacing the track at whatever suits you \ your vehicle. You should know that having been there or are you really that stupid? Rocket |

No apologies neccessary, by any means. the 'trumpo' monniker is fine, as well..... carries some real juice in NY.... no one on sacborg wants to kill you...as far as you know .... it's only the 'net. in person, we're all likely 'lighter' and our collective sarcasm's likely an easier read. in all honesty, though- no offense taken, by any means. we can all bring about a new and better day on these boards, if we let ourselves. i've gone well out of my way to take digs at people on the 'net, so i figure i deserve much of the flak i get. let's write the negativity off to some bad moons... and the apology , while unneccessary, is duly-noted and much appreciated -trumpo marx |
