Here was my problem; I won a Buell carbon fiber race air cleaner on ebay for about $100. Good deal, but not the problem. I was now able to get rid of that bread box air cleaner, once again - not the problem. This was my problem; I liked having the lowers on my S3 and it seemed I would not be able to with the new air cleaner.

I did check here for some help/info but what I got was I would have to decide on one or the other.

Wellllllllll I am here to tell you there is a choice and it took less than an hour to do.

I just cut the lower straight across and used the same mounting hardware. THe top mount was bend to 90 degrees and the lower bracket was losened to align with the hole that wound up being a 1/2 higher.

I just held the lower to wher it is located, marked for the top mounting bracket holes, then removed the carbon cover and drill the proper size holes to accept the mounting bracket.

I did do one thing different, between the top mounting bracket and the air cleaner, and between the lower bracket and the bike's lowers I placed rubber washers (actully hose bib washers) to help with the vibration isolation. SO far so good.

Nice to get what you want once in awhile.

Now the next attempt will to get another lower and cut it with more of a rounded edge to wrap around the air cleaner better, but that is no rush.

Good work!
I didn't even notice that it was modified until you drew my attention to it.
I had to do a simmilar thing to my pront belt guard to make clearance for the new rear isolator's "ear".

I just made a vertical cut paralel to the metal brace.

Seems about the same.
I just went out to check, since I did not notice until you mentioned it.

if you flip it 180o, you'll have more knee room.
i have a nice aluminum backplate that i bought from swon a few years back, which pushes the whole hamcan forward nicely by offsetting the fastener ports.

The cover is deceiving, the the intake for the FI is close to the left side. It is about 1 inch from the left side, almost the same as the bread box - just a better profile.

I have no idea what I'm looking at. What is the purpose of the plastic thing below the air cleaner? Is it a fairing or what? Forgive me for being mostly ignorant about tubers.

I did the same with my lower(when I use them) after installing the race air cleaner. The next thing you need to do is to replace the front engine mount with the X1 one. It looks much nicer. I cut my tab off but it makes it useless if I ever reinstall the breadbox.

I sure wish Buell would make an S4-T or XB12T or whatever they want to call it. I want a sport tourer in the S3-T tradition but with the reliability of my Ulysses. The Uly is a great bike, but it doesn't have any wind protection to speak of, and the seat really should be a little lower. Hell, I'd trade my Uly in on a new generation Thunderbolt before the warranty is up!
However, Erik said no, so I'll just have to force myself to ride the XB12X and endure that silly grin that I get when I ride it.

Yes, the plastic thing below the air cleaner is a wind deflector that came on the S3T (touring). It bolts to the bottom of the breadbox so when you remove the breadbox it no longer has anything to bolt to. Gomo was just showing how he was able to get the best of both worlds: his ham can aircleaner AND maintain the lower on his bike.
