A friend and I were out for an evening ride out in the country. It had just become dark and we had slowed our pace going around a right hand sweeper at around 60mph with me in the lead. I saw several dogs on the right edge of the road and the corner exit. I began to slow rapidly and swung out wide as there was no oncoming traffic. The largest of the dogs begins a hasty retreat to the left in front of me. I had only enough time to straighten up,hold on, and release the brake as I nailed him in the left shoulder/neck area. I managed to come to a stop with both wheels under me. The impact was enough to knock my stock mirror support on the right side forward. I turn around and get off the road, the dog is dead, and neither of us crashed. I cannot believe that there is no visible damage to my bike. I have a tire rub on my chin plastic and dog hair stuck between the tire and the rim at the bead. I am very thankful to be in one piece. | ||

Killed a dog years ago myself. Scary when it happens at speed... you only have instinct to go on. It could have been so much worse. | ||

The OTHER other white meat? I've run over two dogs on my bicycle ate moderate speed but never on my motorcycle. MSF teaches to roll-off throttle and change your trajectory when on a straight (and dealing with a chasing/intercepting dog), in a fast sweeper that would be difficult. PETA friends will be horrified to hear a instructor tell you it's better to run the animal over than crash trying to avoid them. Human life vs. animal, your choice. I had a large dog run out in front of me and my '03 Lightning just before I was going to feed in 5th gear. Cut the poor pooch in half and totalled the Buell. I tumbled for 186 feet before I came to a stop. I was able to ride the bike home in 4th gear only and had only minor injuries. Glad I had all my riding gear on even though I was only going to the hardware store 3 miles away! |
