severed at the spinal column. I had a very nasty wreck, it shattered my pelvis and, from what I understand, the nerve was pulled out of the spinal cord. The doctors wanted to remove my leg 3 days after the crash. I have poor circulation due to the blood vessels being...rearranged. They said they wanted to do it because I could get an infection and it could become gangrenous. My contention was, and is, I might catch a head cold. We aren't removing that. I figured you can't repair what isn't there. Of course the technology wasn't ready then, but I can be patient. It looks like it might pay off too. People protesting stem cell research need to understand what kind of impact they are having on my life. This has the potential to put things right for me again. | ||

Those pesky sciatic nerves!! I did some good damage to mine when I blew out the disc between my L5 & S1. Conciderable numbness to my left foot. Plus lack of some muscle movement & strength in the same area. I whole time I was worried about one thing... being able to shift!!! | ||

Brian, just had a laminotomy/discectomy-between l5 and s1, my sig. other works for the north american spine society, technology on this stuff is moving quick ,hang in there & find the right ortho-surgeon, | ||

I actually think riding has HELPED with the foot recovery. I'm missing very few up shifts. It was about 1 in 3 when I started riding again in April. Now I'm about 1 in 100. | ||

Thanks Snub13, I don't know how to quit....or shut up  Most of my doctors don't know what to make of me. They're so used to people that roll over and play dead because things get hard. That's just not how I'm wired! Not only do I ride, I ride with my son 2 up on the back of the bike! We even rode a rear tire blow-out to a safe stop on the interstate during homecoming! (Ask the relay team  ) Mxer83, I know it's moving fast, I just hope I don't have to go to europe to get the surgery done when the technology is ready, so I can walk right again. | ||

humans have strength well beyond what many (including medios) expect -- Diablo is a great example of that (I enjoyed meeting you albeit briefly at homecoming, sir) -- ya got a lot of support here -- let us know if there's anything we can do (outside of the ballot box -- I think many are already doing their part in that particular venue) insert corny but apt Churchill quote here! | ||

Discussing dealing with the typical insurance and medical bureaucracies makes my skin crawl. Unfortunately, we all need to be self-educated and our own noisy advocates on our behalf. Unfortunately, that often leads to having to pay more $$ for insurance too and people with lingering/chronic conditions take it "in the shorts" I have a pretty different perspective on what some people call "disabilities" - especially after watching Stewart Goddard ride his R6 with the retractable outrigger wheels (he's paralyzed from the waist down) and going scuba diving with him a couple times a year. |
