I hate it when the morning paper has news like this in it:

I know we have people headed that way, please keep your heads in the game folks!

Is the 24 hour background check for drugs and liquor?

That is terrible. I would imagine they will be testing for drugs and alcohol. I think that is SOP for fatal accidents in most states.

The worst part is that they stopped to remove their helmets just before this happened.

That's just plain sad.

Oldog,

I sort of wondered that myself. I had a Cherokee for some years and have driven several Grand Cherokees. They are a little top heavy as are most SUV's but nothing like the big Explorers.

It says the biker drifted into the SUV's lane, I was wondering if the Cherokee may have swerved towards the shoulder and flipped/rolled back into traffic.

I saw a Chevy SUV (Tahoe?) do that about 50 yards ahead of me on a bone dry freeway in California, it happened so fast and with such force that I was truly amazed. The quickness and forces reminded me of the worst bike highsides I've every seen. That was caused by a panic stop all wheel lockup combined with a swerve to avoid a rear ender.

I saw an accident on the local news that was captured on a police car dash camera. I would bet the SUV did exactly what the one I saw on tv did. That is, the poor woman driving the SUV drifted onto the shoulder and then over corrected shooting back across two lanes of traffic before rolling over.

I bet this lady swerved to miss the bike, hit the right shoulder, overcorrected and then went headlong into the rest of the pack probably on the verge of rolling the whole time. Looking at the crash pic, it appears the front of the SUV sustained the most damage.

The article says all 3 SUV passengers were wearing seat belts and were "treated and released" that day.

The aggravating part is that the 2nd rider in the line veered across the center stripe and caused
the whole mess.

I was all prepared to be angry with another brain dead SUV driver. Not the case this time.

Oh yeah, time to beat the drum. Just because there is no law forcing you to wear your gear it does not mean it
isn't neccessary, or that it won't save your life. Don't trust others with your safety if you can take control
of it yourself. This isn't a new thing we as riders are dealing with.

Wear your gear on every ride. No matter how short, no matter how hot it is. The gear is only hot while
you're sitting still. Even then.... I'd rather sweat than Bleed.

That's why you have to really choose your riding buddies carefully. Failing that, leave lots of empty space between your bike and the others.

I agree with your last post, Lowflyer. My thoughts exactly. I can tell stories about riding with people who either rode my rear tire or rode too slow, etc.

I rarely ride with anyone.

I agree Lowflyer, and Jon.
A group ride is like a chain and only as strong as the weakest link in that chain.
(I will refrain from commenting about rides with "missing links")

For those that have never read it I highly recommend riding "the Pace"

Remember every rider in the group has a responsibility to the others to keep it safe.
