I wrapped up the shootout today, turned it into a zip file tonight, and that's where I got stuck.

Between the picture files, sound files, dyno files, and the word doc, it is over 100MB of data, and that is in compressed zip format. Yikes!!

My original plan was to put it up on the American Sport Bike FTP site. But I'm afraid that if I do that, I'm going to bring my web hosting server to it's knees and trash my commerce site in the process. Because I know that the moment I give the address, 100 of you guys are going to simultaneously access it. I can talk to my webmaster and find out if there is an easy way to throttle it from there without trashing my commerce site, but it's too late to ask him tonight.

So, what do we do? I want to publish it in its entirety, not in snippets here. The word doc has the embedded hyperlinks to the sound files, and I don't want the data to be published absent the acknowledgments to those that made it possible.

Blake and all you other IT savvy cats, what is the solution?

Everyone that wants to view it when it's up, I'd recommend going to the dynojet site and downloading and installing the winpep 7 viewer (here: http://www.dynojet.com/downloads/zip/Winpep7.1.3.zip ). You don't NEED it to view the results, but it is helpful if you want to view 8 runs simultaneously while picking out each individually.

Al

Just host it as torrent file?

Quick and simple guide how:

http://torrentfreak.com/how-to-create-a-torrent/

Yes his grammar sucks, but its still helpful.

You can host the .torrent file on whatever ftp/website you want and slowly clients will share the test results automatically.

The seed file takes few KB's from the server, then its uploaded from your personal PC and other people downloading it will share it forward while they download it from yours.

Al, is it all set up in HTML format, so all I'd have to do is host it?

I should've thought it through better. I created a Word file with about 75 or so embedded pictures in it, with hyperlinks to the sound files. There are also a couple subdirectories containing dyno files and .jpg files. In addition, there is a powerpoint picture file that Warren put together that shows the team getting it all done.

In retrospect, I should have known. Word seems to take jpg picture files and expands them into some type of pseudo bitmap. The Word files tend to get a bit bloated in the process.

I'm going to try a couple things first to reduce the file size. First, I'll get Joanne to PDF the word file and see what happens. My concerns with this are that the Winpep dyno plots already lost color resolution when they exported to jpgs, and again when they got embedded in the word doc. If the pdf process strips any more color, the dyno plots will not be parsable. Second, there are embedded hyperlinks. Those won't work from a PDF, I think. That's solvable if people just manually open the sound files.

Also, I just used .WAV audio files. I'll convert them tonight to MP3 files, and that will chop 15-20 Megs from the file size.

I'll chat with my webmaster and see if it is any issue with it being hosted on the American Sport Bike FTP site, bandwidth-wise. If there are some issues, I'll take you guys up on your hosting offers. Stay tuned.

Damn. I was so ready to be done with this.....

Al

hey Al you might wanna consider .wma files for the audio. Also, I have 400gb of bandwidth I never use, and download speeds range from 180-900kbps depending on your end of the connection. I can provide a direct link into a private subdomain at no charge, with no ads and people won't have to wait 3 days for bit torrent to piece it together.

Just throwin it out there.

Yeah, im not real big on the Torrent idea.
Not everyone is going to want to have to get torrent software and whatever else is involved.

It needs to be as simple as possible or people will have problems.

A simple web page would be best IMHO.
Looks like there are plenty of offers to host it.

Al, I have the full version of Adobe Acrobat and would be happy to downsize a Word/pdf file - just in case Joanne doesn't have the full version.

I generally get decent results when I do .pdf wrt. image quality. Acrobat seems to be much more gentle and do a good job of decreasing file size while retaining quality.

I also have video/audio compression software and can quickly do the conversions for you.

Great job on the shoot-out. I'd be happy to help out in any way I can.

Another option that I have seen in the past is to create a gmail account, and share the username and password with everyone. I am not sure about attachment size limits, but with over 2.5 GB of space available for each account, you won't have any trouble there. Then, Badwebbers can login with that username and password and download the attachment through gmail.

I'm not so sure I like the idea of each person having the hard copy of the data.

What if there is an error that is found and cant be changed? etc.

I think it needs to be in a webpage or something to that effect. And really, if you have it as a word doc, it would be easy to make into a simple web page, just load up the pictures/sound files and imbed or link them.

Then it is also accessable anywhere, anytime, and quickly.

I can turn it into a web page, but I'm sure there is someone on here that is better at it than I am.?

Al,

First, wittle down the size of the plots via image optimizer. Then pdf the whole thing. We can host it on BadWeB. Send the whole thing to my gmail address. I'll send it to you.

I agree about not providing the winpep files to everyone.

It's done, see http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/3842/204100.html?1149662792

Blake, you can figure out how you want to publish it here.

My webmaster wasn't in the least concerned with bandwidth. I moved to new servers recently, and he said the server I'm on is very lightly loaded. But file size is time, smaller is better. So I did some trimming.

I converted mono CD quality wav files to 128kBPS mp3's. Hey, it ain't Mozart, 128kBPS its JUST FINE for an muffler recording that was already plagued with a flaky connector and a wacked out AGC stage in the audio compressor. That saved a lot of file size.

The word file converted to PDF shhrunk by almost half and it actually improved it's color resolution on the dyno charts. The only loss was that it broke the hyperlinks to the audio files. We should fix that, but I can't with my pdf converter.

I did not provide all the winpep data, but I provided some and the best of it for each pipe. I think the readers benefit from being able to change the display parameters. It's raw data, there aren't any errors in it to fix. This is all public domain stuff.

I'm sure there will be some minor corrections and such in the document, but I'll maintain some type of revision control on it. Consider the one posted Rev A. But for the most part, I hope its just done because I'm burned out working on it for sure.

Al

Al, I want to complement you on your writing. Everything is very clear and well presented. Great work and thank you very much.

Wonderful job to all of you who made this possible. We're very lucky as a community to have people like you and the sponsors/manufacturers who participated.

You've all spent inordinate amounts of time and money and endured tremendous risk and stress to provide us with this information.

We as a community should be grateful and honor your work by treating it with thoughtful respect.

Thank you.
