can you remove the primary cover off a S2 without taking off the isolator mount?

nope. iso has to come off, JT. when you doing it? lemme know.
use wd on the tips of the isolator plate bolts (thy're exposed from behind, and that's where they collect grime and water) and a little heat. they turn easliy, then. buy new ones at the fastener place in middletown, toss the old bolts. actually, I have a box of new ones, i think. ping me

Sorry to disagree with Tramp, but I changed the tensioner a couple of months ago without removing the iso plate.
I'm not saying it was easy . . . just that it can be done with the right kinda "wiggle" (and now you know why she married me)
That said, it would be a lot easier with the iso plate off. I don't have a stand, so I needed to leave the bike on the sidestand. Hence, leaving the iso plate on the bike.

Philly is correct. I just replaced the stator in my S2T, without removing the isolator plate.

JT let me know your findings on the funny squeal, my S2 does it also. Kind of sounds like a mini burn-out.

My primary cover comes off easy without removing the isolator plate yet my dads S2 had to have the isolator removed to get the primary cover off??

I haven't done it, but it can be done as noted above and by others, one person (Aaron Wilson, I think) said they did a minor trim to make it easier next time. Tramp is right in that you have to take off the isolator, the others are right that it can be done, might just be due to tolerance stackup between different parts where some bikes can and some can't. Maybe I'll do mine in a month or so to see if it can be done, but I'll have the Dremel tool handy "just in case" something needs a slight trim job.

i remove the plate so that the mating surfaces aren't compromised by eccentric contact.
i can operate a motorcycle without my hands on the bars, but it doesn't make it safe.

Duly noted. Eccentric contact used to be a good weekend.
For the record I do crappy wheelies and almost never ride no-hands.
I guess the answer to the original question is "yes it can be done, but it probably shouldn't be done"?

or...it's fine to do, but it's a helluva lot more tedious than simply removing that isolator plate, first.
those plates come off pretty easily when the threads are lubed from the open(inside) end of the frame, and some heat is applied.
tip: after you've reinstalled the plate and the bolts, stuff some grease well into the open end of the bosses, so that moisture and grime no longer compromise the thread condition- much easier to remove, later, and the torque, etc. are still @ spec.
no grease is in the threads, per se, (and I still blue loc-tite 'em, first) but it seals the end of the boss.

Never taken off side plate for primary on multiple S-2's just got to have the "wiggle" as David says.
