Pulled the allen outta my pack this weekend to adjust my idle and wondered again,
why do we even have an idle adjustment anymore? Why can't the ECM figure out
this last little detail? No biggie. Just curious.

Me too.
Factory spec is 1100 or so. At that RPM, my bike shakes like a paint mixer with all of the plastic flapping.
Also in traffic, it overheats.

Reducing my idle to 900 eliminates those problems.

(also, I can adjust my idle without tools make sure your little cable isn't bound up or kinked somehow.)

The ECM can't do it because it has no way to change the amount of air going into the engine at idle. It needs either an idle air bypass valve or electronic throttle control to do that. That's the way cars do it anyway. Course they might be able to control idle speed with spark advance alone. Cars do it these days because it reacts faster than air valves and throttles, helping to prevent stalls. Idle spark advance seems very retarded at around 6 degrees BTDC. I bet they do that to keep the engine cool - putting more combustion heat out the exhaust.

I wonder if the Yamaha r6 with it's fly by wire system sets it's own idle.
It has control of the butterfly via servo motor after all.

The new R6 rides for you............ Actually not really true as you do have to preset the speed to a number you can afford to pay a ticket at..

I thought I read that the R6 still uses cables as a backup to force the throttle plates closed if you release the grip or something. That might mean that it has an ordinary throttle stop to set idle air flow. With the redundant cables they avoid needing a second microprocessor as a monitor on the one controlling the throttles. Got to prevent unintended acceleration somehow.
