Passion for dollars.

Hard to run a forum and break even.

The passion part might be right, but I don’t see the dollars part. There would have to be a pretty big pile of dollars involved for me to go through what I watch Blake deal with. And I mean, a pile. It would have to look like that once-in-a-career catch of $6 a pound shrimp that you take advantage of by climbing to the top and changing that burned out light bulb in the rigging that’s so hard to get to.

And that would be monthly.

Paul (Snail),

Who do you imply may have acted uncharacteristically? Me? I off sponsors all the time. Then I get criticized for not supporting them or for trying to tell them how to run their business or even for betraying them.

Money? Me? : ?

I guess I need to get busy and make an actual business out of this place. Apparently a lot of folks and even friends believe it makes a profit.

Find me the best price on a full service dedicated linux web server that can handle 200 GB/mo, 2Mb/s peak output with plenty of power, full daily backups, a hot line to the sysadmin and excellent customer service.

If you find a significantly better deal than what BadWeB currently enjoys, we'll jump on it.

I wonder, how many folks here would resent the fact if I did endeavor to make a profit running the place?

Anyone?

What would motivate our sponsors to fund the operation and maintenance of the place if any old slick willy huckster or their reputable competition were able to market their products here unrestricted?

Be well old friend. Careful who you listen to. Call me anytime. Well, not tonight. Tonight I'm celebrating 21 years of wedded wonder with my beloved Michele.

She says "hello."

Blake,
It thought this is a discussion board....not a Sponsor's board. I for one come here to get the best information I can about a product that I really like. I never thought that the advice and counsel of those more knowledgeable about Buell than I, was limited to the Sponsors of the BadWeb nor do I read that in the policy. The sponsors pay to advertise here in the hope of increasing their business and quite frankly it worked with me. I never thought that any board member would be hassled for sharing good Buell information regarding a non-sponsor. I've read many of Court's posts on the subject and in no way do I find them analogous to the "Moog scenario" that you outline above. You deserve a lot of credit for administering one of the best discussion boards I've been privileged to be part of. I think that your position on this matter is putting the fundamental element of internet discussion, the FREE flow of information among posters at risk. With all due respect I say lighten up...life's too short and this is too good a place!

I'm not trying to be dense here, or even start a fight, just looking for a little clarification. After reading the Moog analogy, the accompanying explanation, and the policy (Which I assume is covered under the following verbiage "Absent permission from a board custodian, I will refrain entirely from the promotion and/or marketing of commercial merchandise or other similar/competing web sites" I'd like a smidgen of clarification:

Where do I run foul of the rules in the following progression:

a) Conti RoadAttacks are awesome!
b) Conti RoadAttacks are awesome and they are on special for $100 bucks off at www.cheaproadattacks.com !
c) Conti RoadAttacks are awesome and my buddy Jimmy at www.jimmyscheaproadattacks.com has them in stock!
c) Conti RoadAttacks are awesome and I have 10 sets in stock!

And where would a custodian run foul of the rules? I get the impression from the Moog story that the standards may be different/higher.

And finally, as the guy who said publicly than an explanation was owed: Blake, thanks for the explanation.

Happy anniversayr, you're but children.

The base resource is the membership, and you're drawing on that for free, and selling advertising.

I want to unite the members into a Poster's Guild and start getting members compensated for their hard work and time.

Cheese n' Rice. 21 Years. Congrats, Michele & Blake!

BTW, as has been said before, this is Blake's BBS. He can run it as he sees fit - just as many of us run our homes as we and our partners in life see fit.

I was really saddened when Aaron left. I don't even KNOW him - but knew that a friendship had gone bust. I got a bit down when Court left. Again, a friendship gone bust?

Ya know, maybe instead of dissing the guy who sacrifices so much to run this place we could THANK him for running this place at great personal, financial, and emotional expense even....

Thanks Blake. Oh, and thanks Michele for letting Blake play with us.

Blake,
Happy anniversary.

A minor point.
Someone posted a link to the rules that one needs to abide by when signing up.
I'm pretty sure it's the first time I've seen them.
When I signed up I don't remember them existing, and don't remember agreeing to them.
When they were introduced I don't remember being told I needed to agree, or rescind my account if I didn't.

I am still passionate about Buells, and am looking at ways where I can afford to buy the S1W back.

I don't agree with all the rules, and I don't want to leave.

What now...

Thanks all for the well-wishes and congratulations, kind words and support. It's folks like you who help lift others up rather than beat them down who are real blessings in my life. Without folks like you, I'd probably be a miserable old hag most all the time. As it is, just part time. : ) Thanks.

Paul (Snail),
Unfortunately it does take "money" to pay the bills. :/ If you do take time to look into the cost for the required dedicated server power and bandwidth capacity I mentioned, I think you'll be surprised by the cost. Fact is we will soon be running on a new dual server system to help speed things up. Then tack on the full service sysadmin. Yep, it does take money to keep the place up and running for everyone. What would you have us do? Drop the sponsorship scenario and solicit funds from the folks? WAY too much work for my taste. Plus, BadWeB is not so much a club as it is a community.

Brotherbuell,
You read well! : D As you say, there is no such policy that folks not talk about Buell related stuff here, sponsor or non-sponsor products included. That is precisely part of what the place is for. Thank you for recognizing that!

Our policy is simply that folks avoid promoting/advertising/marketing products or services or commercial ventures of non-sponsors. Please in my earlier post on the issue here note my clarification of such product promotion comprising a repeated or systematic behavior, and/or excessively salesmanlike verbiage.

Also, please look up the words "promote", "market", and "advertise" and compare their applicable meanings to those of words like "discuss", "advise" and "inform".

No one has ever been questioned for simply casually sharing information or talking about his bike and/or what he/she buys for it. Thanks for the questions. That kind of content is always appreciated and always welcome. We vigorously encourage it!

I hope this helps clarify the issue for everyone I'm sure. If not, please trust in your friendly board custodians. If anyone has a problem with one of us, bubble it up to another of us for consideration. We don't always agree on stuff. We're human and flawed just like everyone else here.

TCSkeptic,
Also important to know would be how often the example statements you posted had appeared. Absent any kind of repetitive promotional behavior, only your examples "c" and "c" (last one supposed to be "d"?) would be problematic.

The rules apply equally to everyone, custodians, friends, longstanding highly valued contributors and elite Buellerati. Actually we are probably more rigorous in holding board custodians and other prominent board contributors to the spirit of the board policies. A precedent set is tough to overturn, honorably anyway.

There is a radar factor involved as well. Once someone is seen to cross over the line and is politely requested to avoid doing so, their posts usually garner more attention, they are "on the radar" so to speak.

Trust me, the last thing any of us custodians wants to do is spend our time not having fun concerning this place. Pretty sure none of us look at contacting folks to remind them of the board policies and request that they please honor them as even remotely resembling anything fun. We don't like doing it at all, ever. We only intervene when we feel that the integrity of the board is at being violated or put at risk.

Thanks to you too for the questions.

Believe it or not the custodians have hashed through this issue and discussed and debated and wrinkled our brows about this issue a lot more than you probably imagine.

The consensus is that while we'd like to be able to provide a set of black and white rules on the issue, it really is more a spirit of the policy case by case type of situation. So unfortunately it does necessarily involve a bit of grey area and some trying to get inside the head of folks type of evaluation. That's why we have always had such a stellar crew of custodians.

For the aforementioned reasons, we don't actually delete problematic posts, we move them to a depository that is only viewable by custodians. We also inform each other whenever we feel the need to take any kind of interventionary action. Lots of times we first discuss the particular issue at hand.

Bottom line like I said before is that anyone who sees fit to claim that our policy is to frown upon the mention of non-sponsors' products or services is either ignorant of our policy or not being honest. The good news is that ignorance can be cured. : ] I'm living proof! : ] At least on some things. For instance, thanks to my friend Paul in Oz, I now understand that too much front brake can be a very bad thing. : )

Don (M1),
You been eavesdropping on us? LOL! Actually, Blake makes it a point to be off the computer, even recreationally, when Michele arrives home. She deserves my full attention in the evenings and on most weekends too. During the day, I sometimes goof off a lot. She's never seen fit to check up on me here, so I'm not in trouble for that. : D

Thanks to all who said them for the kind words. I really appreciate that and thank you sincerely.

The good news is that we will hopefully have some really good things in the works for the site in the not too distant future.

MikeJ,
Congrats for being the first to notice. : D

Peter.
I suppose that one needn't agree with all the rules per se, just agree to respect and and honor them regardless. In addition, I'd say that anyone who is unwilling to respect any of the custodians or any of the sponsors here should probably avoid the place. I hope that doesn't include you.

Folks, apparently I mis-spoke and unintentionally left the wrong impression earlier. I need to correct a prior potentially misleading statement. Court has not been "waiting almost a year now for (his friend) to finish rebuilding his S2's engine." The truth is that he sent it off about 7 months prior to even knowing what work he wanted to have done on it and with no concern for a timely return delivery and he is not in the least bit anxious for its return as I had implied. Apparently I misread his statement that "They have my personal, and quite famous, Buell S-2 LAP OF AMERICA bike at the moment and soon it will headed back to New York City. . . I can't wait!" The truth according to Court is that he is/was just really enthused about the $5k he finally decided to spend on his S2 and couldn't help but brag about it. Perfectly understandable.

He did a lot more than just brag about his bike and the work he was paying to have his friend perform. The example promotional language from my analogy in my post here yesterday mirror the type of "bragging" Court saw fit to do.

For the record, the following is exactly the request I made to Court. I don't think it is silly or out of line.

quote:

Sending BadWeBrs to visit the [redacted]website is a no-no. Please try to keep your promotional gloryspeak concerning [redacted] to a minimum. It is a very sensitive issue for me. I'm not sure you understand my view on it or what has transpired. Lots of miserableness for sure.

Like I've said before, [redacted] see fit to shun participating on BadWeB. It's not fair to our supporting active helpful sponsors to have folks promoting [redacted], their competitor, on BadWeB.

Thanks for understanding,

Blake

Blake, when this storm haoppened I resolved to ignore it. But I'm weak.

The point I was trying to make was friendships should transcend loyalty to a sponser. Badweb used to be a motorcycle board rather than a web based catalog. I remember when....

It's just my opinion, means nothing. But the same people that left would have been the first up to donate tme or money to help you keep this place running. Their generosity, (and your's) is well documented.

Several of your members keep mentioning that this is YOUR website to run as you see fit...and I agree. Members are also what makes a website active, they're why sponsers sign up. Member are the most important part of the equation, without them you have nothing.

Your analogy with the Letterman/Leno senario was inacurate. Court isn't on Badweb payroll.

I'm on my third cup of coffee.

What I'm typing is out of friendship, not animosity. You have never done one single thing offensive to me, personaly. The opposite, in fact, you have always treated me with respect and our friendship is solid, I hope.

I should bring this to closure, but I can't seem to describe exactly how I feel, so I'll just dig myself in deeper, most likely, but...

Expecting Court to contain his enthusiasm towards either/or his bikes, his friends, is unrealistic.

Look in your heart for guidance, not the balance sheet. I'll butt out now.
