Nascar has done the reality thing with Rousch. As they had a elimination competition to be the next young driver.

Blake, thanks for the explanation, and that is what I thought it was. I hope Court comes back too, as he is such an asset to the family.

On a related matter, since we seem to be in the air-clearing mode, what was the story with Aaron Wilson as a regular poster and Nallin Racing as a sponsor? I can remember that one day he was on here and the next he was gone. I did a search for any posts that would have explained it, but was unable to find any. If you do not want to elaborate, I will understand. I certainly think that those folks who think you "owe them" an explanation regarding these matters have been eating too much honey and talking with the bees.

I know folks come and go on these sites over the years as nothing remains the same, but Aaron was a lynch pin for years on Badweb, and the mystery has been perplexing. Whut happened...if you don't mind?

What's done is done.
Life goes on.
Friends part ways.
New friends are found.
Trust, gained or lost, is fragile.
Egos and emotions are flammable and fragile.
Curiosity is best left to cats with nine lives left.
The story is there if it's that important for you to find it, but in the end it's all water under the bridge.
Sail on, better days to be.

"The only way anyone can pass in F1 is for the guy in front of them to have to pit...facinating!"

Actually Schumacher was leading before and after the pit... I must not have explained it well : ). In any case, my point wasn't about overtaking in F1... It was about strategy and the fact that most people in the US just don't get it... For the AMA to have "good racing" they would need to run with 1.5 gallon tanks and make races long enough to require a 2-3 pit strategy... key word being strategy. Don't get me wrong... I like racing that has overtaking for sure, and F1 is sorely lacking in that regard, but the strategy in F1 is, IMO, second to none (maybe ALMS and the DPs here in the US, and they have lots of passing too... GREAT racing to be watched there.

It comes down to Americans generally thinking that "The fastest guy wins" versus "The slowest guy who still finishes first wins". There's a subtle yet significant difference in the two statements.

Somehow to me F1 and soccer just go together. I don't like either one. I am a late convert to NASCAR, i do like it. It did produce the best racing quote of all time:
Cole: "Yeah, well the sonofabitch just slammed into me!"
Harry Hogge: "No, no, he didn't slam into you, he didn't bump you, he didn't nudge you...he RUBBED you. And rubbin, son, is racin'."
Yes sir that's America.

Mike is wise.

Who is that guy who announces for MotoGP. Besides the poor commentary, his high-pitched raspy voice is more irritating than a badly tuned two stoke engine. I usually watch half the race with the sound turned off.

Ralph Sheheen is the replacement for Brian Drubber. Drubber was about on par with the MotoGP commentator, but at least he had a nice non-irritating voice.

I don't understand why some commentators think they need to tell you exactly what you are seeing. The he's coming past, no maybe not, yes, no blah blah blag.

Tell me how fast they are going or what gear they are in, or what tires they are using, their top speed that lap, the weight of the bike, how much fuel it burns in the race, how hard they apply the brakes, the maximum lean angle, the g-forces at max lean, any number of really interesting factoids. But GEEEZ! Please cease the silly radio style commentary!

I been watching this thread for a while, and I have to admit initially I was curious (what was up with Court, Blake etc). Now it's gotten to the point where I don't really care what happened. What does amaze me, though, are the lengths to which some folks are going to avoid telling their side of the story when somebody else asks a direct question.

You hang around here long enough and you can't help but feel a part of a "family" of sorts. Dysfunctional, perhaps, but still a family. How many times on this site have you heard someone offer something to another member, a part or a place to stay, or say hey, if you're in my area, give me a call, maybe we can hook up. Or wants to share pictures of their little ones, or best wishes when a rider goes down.

I guess this whole thing is a pretty good reality check - any feelings we might have of belonging to the BadWeb family are probably wishful thinking. Maybe that's why some of us got so frustrated with those who choose to stonewall. It's their right, absolutely. But it is a big disappointment

You should be able to be straight with your family, but it seems like a lot of what I have been reading above are just rationalizations, BS, and "deep thoughts" (remember the parody Al Franken used to do on SNL? Only difference is he was TRYING to be funny). Feels like I'm in junior high school again.

Well - I still appreciate the tech advice I've gotten here but recent developments make me glad I went out and bought the service manual.

If this somehow tee's you off, so be it. But don't bother flaming me here, because I won't see it. If you are really "inspired" please feel free to PM me, though. I'll be sticking to the tech threads in the future

ciao

Mikey,

You are a friend and the real deal, on the internet or in person, MikeyP is MikeyP. You know what a friend is. I value that in a friend a LOT!

Be well mia amico.

Midnight,

What is it you wish to know? Nothing deep nor dark here. I simply asked Court to please avoid promoting non-sponsors on the BadWeB. Court is very enthused and eager to promote his good friend's 2nd job/business and has been waiting almost a year now for them to finish rebuilding his S2's engine. I don't blame him for his enthusiasm at all. We just need him to honor the policies of the board and respect polite requests that he please do honor our policies here.

It is not BadWeB policy, as some see fit to mis-state, that one should not mention a non-sponsor or their product(s) on BadWeB. That is a horrible mischaracterization of our policy here concerning non-sponsor promotion and anyone who makes such a claim is either ignorant of our policy or is not being honest.

It is often how some men see fit to characterize to others these types of contentious issues that makes it easy to assess their honor/integrity. Anyone who tries to tell folks that BadWeB does not permit the mention or discussion of non-sponsor products is either ignorant of our policy or lacking honor.

I'll try to once again clarify that issue for those who are unfamiliar with it. How about an analogy?

Are you familiar with any of the evening talk shows, you know, like Leno or Letterman? They each have bands who's leaders also act as sidekicks, joining in on the show's comedic dialogue fairly often.

What do you think the folks at NBC or CBS would do if during the normal course of comedic banter the band-leaders/side-kicks repeatedly interjected statements like the following:

"I've know the folks at Moog for 10 years, they are wonderful to work with."

"You'll not find better than Moog musical instruments."

"My new keyboard is from Moog and I can't wait to get it."

"If you don't want perfection, then don't buy a Moog keyboard!"

"If you want to see my new keyboard, you should check it out at Moog's web site!"

Hey, they are band-leaders and are enthused about their keyboards and like to talk about them too, right?

But what do you imagine the networks might say about that kind of repeated flowery non-sponsor marketing hype/promotion on their airtime especially if one of their primary sponsors was like Yamaha Music, or another direct competitor to Moog?

I imagine that on the first instance the network executives would simply ask the band leader to please avoid that kind of promotion of a non-sponsor. The second time they might fine him and tell him to please cease promoting that non-sponsor. The third time, they'd probably fine and fire him.

I would never fire/ban Court. What I did was to politely ask him to agree to please just avoid promoting his friend's 2nd job/business on BadWeB. That's it. Well initially it was more of a directive, but a cooler head miraculously prevailed and I quickly edited my initial knee-jerk (I'd be the jerk in question) message to him to be polite and respectful, as Court absolutely deserves. Apparently though, my request is unacceptable to Court, and so he has left the building.

Anyone who promotes the idea that Court was banned is not being honest; anyone who knows better yet allows such an untruth to propagate and survive lacks honor and integrity.

This is nothing that hasn't happened dozens of time before. The way folks respond to it says a lot about their character.

We all just want to have fun talking about motorcycles and other fun stuff. Right? Maybe we can learn some cool stuff too. Maybe we can help each other with various Buell motorcycle issues.

All the ego and drama is entirely undesirable.

The good news is that I'm pretty sure that Court is indeed a man of honor and integrity, so I'm sure he'll rejoin our community sooner or later.

After all, he owes me for not pushing him into the pool a few months ago.

To honor your sponsors, a line must be drawn.

Is it safe to assume then, that it's about money?

1. Sponsers pay money to advertise and sell their products.

2. Web admins. colletct the money and pay the web associated bills.

3. Members provide the discussion matterial for free.

Am I missing something here? In business when I have trouble understanding why some people act uncharactoristicly I have found it usally involves money.

So, back to the members, who have no 'right' to know or question the admin., just keep sending in your free matterial, and toe the line.

Somewhere along the line something important was replaced with something less important. Passion for dollars.

Snail -- passion ofr dollars is certain one valid way to see it -- another is attempting to keep the board alive (something that I would certainly not be willing to contribute nearly as much time/money/sweat toward as Blake and company do)

as for what happened in the past, well, I don't beleive anyone except the folks that were directly involved know what happened -- and they ain't talking (their call, I believe) -- anyone's right to know the contents of a conversation that took place in private is exactly what the conversationalists say it is (the conversations, while re-harshed ad nauseum here and on other boards, did, in fact, take place in private)

I like marmelade on MY toast

To add a little . . .

Boards like this cost money. If traffic is low you might be able to build/maintain your own box and leech off of someone's loaned bandwidth for next to nothing, but as traffic increases the need for more hardware and more bandwidth increases. This adds cost. I won't pretend to know what it costs to run badweb, but these costs can get quite expensive.

Who pays this cost? At the early stages the founder/owner of a board may pay the costs out of pocket, but as the board grows the cost may become too much for a single person to pay to keep the board. The most common answer is to get others to help pay for the board, but who wants to give away money? The board must offer some value to those sending in money, so this is where sponsorship comes in.

Sponsors pay to advertise on a board. The result is that their business name reaches to more potential customers and the board itself becomes more financially stable. However, the value to the sponsor must be maintained. If a non-paying party decides to advertise their business, they are getting what the sponsor gets without the cost. Why should the sponsor pay for something he could have for free? The result is that the sponsorship is devalued. Who would pay big bucks to advertise during the superbowl if another party could simply upload and broadcast their own superbowl ad from home?

The board owner/moderator then has two options. One is to allow others to advertise for free, devaluing sponsorship, thus reducing the amount paid in from sponsorship and returning the costs of running the site to him/herself. A side effect of this option is that the board content is polluted with uncontrolled advertising. The other is to set up and enforce rules as to who can advertise and what constitutes and advertisement. Some will dispute these rules, but they must remain for the board to prosper.

That is my understanding of it. If that's wrong the moderators are free to edit/correct it. What the heck- if I'm wrong the mods can just delete the whole thing. Hopefully it helps someone to better understand the financial issue.
