went out for a ride this morning, and saw a bunch of harley touring bikes, and the old melon started smoking... I've been trying to figure out some sort of hard luggage to use on a CityX for adventure touring. Does anyone on here have a set of the 'police' style harley panniers they could measure up and / or photograph for me? Mounts aren't an issue, as I do alloy metalwork for a living, but I'm not a 'Harley' guy, and have no idea if they can physically clear the components on the back of an Xb9.(saves me a LOT of work building custom aluminum cases if they will fit !) Based on the lozenge shape I recall seeing, I think I'd have to flip them side to side to clear the pegs ( ie: run the harley 'rh' case on the left side) any input greatly appreciated. thanks | ||

You could also look into Pelican cases... then make a framework, bracket set-up.. They claim they are all but indestructable, ancd, I can vouch for the streangth..water proof, etc... Might be something to look at... Chase | ||

I've looked at the Pelicans, and wasnt too impressed with the sizes & shapes ( not to mention the cost locally) H-B, and others are also prohibitively expensive here in canada - the HD cases are available used, at least, and offer some other possibilites. ( such as finding actual police cases, with the internal fuel tanks, and rigging a transfer pump / fuel selector valve ) as for aluminum adventure luggage, I've also taken a good look at the 'Jesse' setup: my significant other nearly p****d herself laughing when I showed her the welds on the Jesse site, if that gives you any comparison to the stuff I build for myself.  I'm also not too fond of their non-renforced corners, and will do things 'differently' if I build myself a set. I'm just trying to save a couple worth of weeks of my spare time for riding, rather than building luggage! | ||

Personally, i think you would be better off building your own stuff...MUCH lighter, and you could shape it how you wanted, mayeb even make it mdoular... Teh HD cases are pretty heavy if I remember right, and woudl probably feel ackward that far up... Chase | ||

0.125" aluminum, with 1/4 pipe corners wouldnt exactly be light, either! the joy of making my own mounts is I can keep everything reasonably well balanced ( read low as possible), regardless of luggage type. I dont plan on going using a 'hard' top box with either setup. IIRC, the HD cases are fibreglass: its the mounts, crash bars, and contents that are heavy. | ||

The guys on the Harley touring bikes probably looked over at your CityX and started wondering how to make their bikes handle, accelerate, and stop good as well....................... And then again, maybe not  | ||

actually, my local HD dealership doesn't handle buells. result is that most of the local HD crowd hear the exhaust, realize its harley based, and flog the **** out of their cruisers through the twisties trying to catch up to get a better look. 99% of them have been very interested, and helpful, and even the few growlers have to admit its a neat bike - maybe not what they want, but a neat bike. | ||

Wardan123, I was serious enough to start this thread: can you possibly take some measurements ( length, width, height) and close up photos of those cases for me so I can build up a cardboard dummy, and see what'd be involved in mounting them to the CityX? Also, do those cases have the fuel cell, or are they strictly gear cases? any idea what they weigh? my direct email is ulendo at telus dot net thanks | ||

Sure. I'll send you the info tomorrow. These are a PVC type plastic off of my friends bike. I considered them for my x1 but decided otherwise. |
