i have the opportunity to get a bike for practically free. it's a 1987 250cc dirt bike. i'm not sure what brand or model#. the body is yellow. it needs a new piston and rings. and the muffler is broken off. i guess what i'm wondering is if i get this how much would i have to invest to get it running.

It will depend on how bad other stuff is.Piston/rings/gaskets are usually cheap. What brand bike? How are the chain/sprockets/brakes/shock/forks/ etc etc etc?If you like projects it might be OK.Some of the more expensive bikes I have had have been free.Remember in dirtbike years a 1987 is stone age as suspension and engines have gone ahead lightyears.Do a quick addition of what you might invest and then look at ads for newer bikes to see what you could get for same money. If it looks like you are ahead of the game with what you are getting go for it.

Yellow body, unless its been changed is prolly suzuki, but some yamahas came yellow too, cant remember when they changed, I think sometime in the early 80s.

The piston, rings and gasket set is cheap as said before, but the silencer usually isn't too cheap, unless you know a welder who can fix it.

I'd get it, if nothing else, just put new rings and sell it.

1987 might be chrome lined cylinder,
Piston, rings, wrist pin and bearing, and either rechroming or sleeving will cost around $250. Just put a sign on it in the front yard, it will be gone by Sunday.

I have sold a bunch of junked out dirt bikes in the last two years. Best one was a badly buggered up ignition Yamaha 125 I bought for $80, and sold two days later for $150.

If he's getting it for free, then the pressure is off for doing it "the right way"

Make sure it has spark before taking it though! not even worth it for free!
