I'm currently riding a crapped out 95 yamaha trx850 - great bike but its dying. So I've decided I need a non japanese bike. I'd love a Harley but I'm not into a cruiser atm and I found an 04 xb12r for sale for $3000 less than I could buy an '06 model. The 04 has been done up for competition shows - sweet paint, awesome polish job on the rims, racing kit and exhaust and tinted screen - its won trophies, The 06 obviously has none of the above however the 06 hasn't done 20000kms. Is it worth coughing up the extra for the 06 model? Are the 04 and 06 model that different? Which would be the better buy? Should I go for something Italian?

I would suggest getting a new one.
Someone else's custom could be your headache.
New bikes come with warrantees and the 2006 have the improved tranny.

When they came eout, I wanted a TRX850 soooo bad.

Depends on your banking situ, and tastes,
Nate is quite right, You will have to deal with any and all mechanical issues
can you afford to lay out 3000$ for repairs?
the race kit is a value add,
the polishing you can do your self if you wish.
FWIW I would not be too caught up on the "show bike" aspect of this purchase.

Some owners here have added customizing and personalizing touches, gone to various events and come home with awards, or better yet Erik's autograph on the sled,

improvements to the 06:
tranny (as nate indicated)
final drive belt
air box arrangement
frame pucks
depending on version, additional fuel capacity
a miriad of other improvements

If you are financing this purchase consider this that on a 10k purchase you will likely be paying about 16k when its all said and done

loaning money is sooo much more profitable than making bikes.....

on the Italian, is this your daily driver?, If so, whats the support for their product like in your area, I would love to have a DUC but Too pricy and service intensive,

what ever you do good luck..

I'd go for the '06 even though more parts have been PIMPED out to China(i hate outsourcing to China).Technology only moves forward.Skip the Italians, too difficult sourcing parts. My Italian motorcycle just yesterday began running.Between sourcing parts, and maintainance it took me from November until yesterday.Besides, the Buells are waaay simpler a machine than anything else. And that's a GOOD THING!

If you are going to be disappointed that you didn't get the '07 instead of the '06 (commonly happens), I'd either wait, or get a used one to trade in for the '06 or the '07 if you like one of the '07s more.

Buy the Buell. Wich ever one is calling out to you. Listen carefully, it starts out softly, then steers something deep within, it can't be denied!

Go for the '06...unless it would be budget foolish. Honor thy budget, bro! A busted budget stays with you long after the joy of a new bike fades.

"crapped out"...I like that...: )

1 more vote for the '06. Full warranty and no unknowns. If you can wait for the '07's, even better.

Unless it was a screamin' deal on the '04, I'd hold out for an '06 or '07, depending on how long you want to wait. Reason being is that the '06 has some upgrades that cannot be done on the '04 for any reasonable price. 2006 improvements include the newer tranny, more fuel capacity, lighter/stiffer swingarm, larger forks, etc. I bought my '04 new in October of '03 and I'm still making payments on it. I didn't care at all when the '05s came out, but the nicer tranny and increased fuel capacity of the '06 would be really nice to have. The difference isn't so great that I'd trade up, but if I was buying again right now I'd be looking for a deal on an '06 model.
